That's because the original T1 was a classic though, followed up with another classic sequel in T2. These are indisputable movie classics, like Alien and Aliens. Spiderman has never had that. Sure there are fans of Raimi's trilogy, but I doubt many would call them classic. There isn't a perfect genre defining Spiderman movie, there is no point of reference to hold up every new release to. Just lots of movies with good elements to them, all different all failing in some way. Therefore it leaves hope that there will be someday in the future.

Up until recently I had thought Spiderman 2 was considered a classic of the genre. Now apparently a bunch of people think it's crap.

This will never be possible. Terminator did not exist until James Cameron put it on screen. It gives us all a singular point of reference. Spider-Man had decades worth of history before the Raimi films ever came into being. 100's of different writers all interpreting the character in different ways. There is no way to translate that into a film version that will make everyone happy. Raimi hated the McFarlane stuff and Venom. I love that stuff. Some may hate the Ultimate Universe. Others won't. Everyone including the filmmakers, actors, and fans all have a different take on who this character is based on the books, tv show, cartoons, they saw. And it is happening to every character in comics that gets a movie. The exception to the rule was probably Blade. No one really knew or cared enough about him to care what changes they made. And in fact the films were so popular, Blade was changed to be more like Wesley Snipes' version.

The more I see people comparing this movie to the Schumacher Bat films the more I'm actually looking forward to it. :lol We never got a Spider-Man movie in the 90's so it might be fun to see something in that style, warts and all. The one trailer where Electro says "Time to catch a spider" does sound like something the Riddler or Mr. Freeze would say. Didn't one of them actually say "Time to catch a bat" or something like that?

So just to recap my own thoughts after seeing it in the theater(i watched a bootleg first a few weeks back)

- Good movie overall, but not as focused as the first
- Awesome action and Spiderman is perfect
- Great emotion keeps the character's relationships grounded and makes them feel authentic
- Harry isn't what I wanted(I wanted Norman) but was handled well none the less
- Electro is not the train wreck most people expected but still could have been better
- Peter's parents and dad stuff feels rushed and should have gotten better attention
- It does a great job of setting up future films and events

Overall, my rating remains the same 7/10

Loved it and while I give the ever so slight edge to ASM1 as a better movie thanks to a more focused plot that knows where it wants to go, this movie will be the one I and most people will watch more often. Like how I consider Alien better than Aliens but Aliens' action lends itself to being more fun on repeat viewings.

So is it true that composer James Horner is not back for this film?? His Spidey theme in the first film was great IMO. I am not a huge Horner fan (all his scores sound the same) but I thought his Spidey music was great.

Now Hans Zimmer has stepped in??? How does the score sound. I like some of Zimmers work but I don't think he did a very good job with Man of Steel but thought parts of his Dark KNight music was great.

I very much liked the ASM theme but the new one fits the movie well. The movie starts with it as well as an action scene that set the tone well. They work together nicely.

Spider-man 2. :dunno

Must be an age thing, I always thought it was poor. Best of a bad lot (original trilogy) by a mile admittedly.

We are saying the same things with different words. I concur.

I agree, Spider-man 2 is a classic and it's still my favorite comic book movie, it's my gold standard for the genre and no comic film has quite been as good as that yet. The Dark Knight, Iron man, and First Class are a close second.

I watched Spiderman 3 last night. I can enjoy it on some level, it does have some cool action. The emo-parker stuff was terrible and yet funny at the same time, uncomfortably funny in a way. I loved Maguire's delivery of ''well look at Goblin junior, little Goblin gonna cry?''

The inclusion of Venom was unfortunate, you could really tell that Raimi resented having to put him in. Symbiote Spidey alone would have been enough I feel.

I think I was 22 when it came out, loved it, watched it a week or two ago and still think its great.

I was bit older than that, but I had been completely hyped with the prospect of Cameron directing it (part 1). I imagined a hyper realistic, jaw dropping, bar raising fantasy classic. What I got was a slightly silly, slightly cheesy Raimi pic. As I've said many times on here, I love Raimi, but he mixes extreme theatricality and lightness with hard core gore and violence (Evil Dead, Darkman etc) Take away the violence and gore and your left with an uneven mix of doe-eyed unrealistic performances and theatricality. Which is why I didn't like his Spiderman movies. The second was by far the best, because it had a bit more Raimi in it, Doc Ock's creation for example. But Maguire, Dunst, Franco and the Goblin costume had already killed it for me.

I found a lot to like (and dislike I suppose) in these new movies, but at least they have a sense of verisimilitude. I can believe in Garfield and Stone, and some of the VFX work, especially in this new one is exceptional.

I never actually minded the emo Parker stuff, because it felt like the filmmakers were just having fun, in a "it's all a bit silly anyway isn't it?" type of way. And I thought it was too.

There were a few worrying signs in ASM2 that it could lose it's sense of heightened reality pretty quickly, especially in the villain department. I hope it doesn't happen.

I think if you took away all the dancing scenes and the Uncle Ben recon it would be fine

It would have been great if it were just sandman, I liked his character alot in the film. Just take out the black costume, venom, and the needless fight between Peter and MJ. make it Harry and Sandman against Spider-man and you have a solid film on your hands.

The same can be said for Return of the Jedi. I always thought it and the rest of the OT were generally regarded as classics and equal in quality, but I was shocked to see more than a few people here say it's "crap", or, "as bad as the prequels".
