Re: The Amazing Spider-Man

The action scenes are some of the BEST yet (dare I say possibly the BEST Spidey action scenes? You be the judge) and you can see the very comic pages come to life. The camera spins, flips, rotates and even goes first-person just about as many times as Spidey does in the whole movie so you really get the sense of his movements.

Agreed with almost everything you said, but definitely this. I literally did think while watching it that it really felt like watching a comic book.

I liked the costume before seeing the movie, but I loved in the movie. And regarding it being a bit ill-fitting and showing no real muscle definition, I was fine with that. It not being 100% perfect just shows that a kid made the costume. We're already suspending belief to think he could, so the fact that it doesn't fit like a second layer of skin is fine.

Re: The Amazing Spider-Man

Saw it this afternoon. My thoughts are still kinda stewing, but I really didn't care for the first hour, seemed pointless to retread the origin and I didn't like the changes at all. The rest of it was great, minus gripes about the mask coming off all the damn time.

I will say this: The scene on the bridge with the boy was my favorite scene in all the Spider-Man movies.

I would have to disagree. My favorite part of the film is the first half, it's once he becomes spider-man that the film looses steam for me. Everything with Peter was fantastic and once he put the suit on it becomes less interesting. I would have liked it more had they cut one of the lizard fight scenes and put in another character scene with Peter and somebody, but that's really because Garfield was such a treat to watch as peter.

The crane scene was on par with my favorite moments in the spider-man film franchise so far, got crazy goose bumps with that scene.

Re: The Amazing Spider-Man

I'm a longtime Spidey fan. He is undoubtedly my favorite superhero of all time and I grew up with the character. So I was quite nervous about this reboot to begin with especially with my unfamiliarity with most of the cast and the director (Marc Webb).

I'm glad to say that Amazing Spider-man is just that...AMAZING. Is a reboot necessary so soon? Probably not. But as a Spidey fan I'd rather have Spider-man out there than not at all!

Let me start with that I think Andy Garfield IS the best and most believable modern Spider-man. While you could probably relate Maguire with the 616 "adult and in the real world working" Spidey, Amazing Spider-man is more like Ultimate Spider-man and that's a good thing in my opinion.

Garfield acts with believability as a modern, outcast teen. He looks away a lot, fumbles his words, trips around and does a fantastic job as the shy Parker with hints of brilliance. There are scenes that hint how smart Peter is (discussing the broken a/c with Uncle Ben) and he does a great job of conveying emotion (something I think Maguire struggles with because he has a bland voice and sometimes emotionless expression on his face, it was one of my first thoughts when he was cast as Spidey) during the critical parts. Garfield also exhibits a lot more charisma and charm as the character than Maguire does.

Garfield's Spidey is also the Mark Bagley Spidey come-to-life. If Ditko ruled Spidey in the 60's, then comic fans know Mark Bagley has ruled Spider-man since the mid-90's until today. Spidey in this movie is much more lithe and trim, acrobatic and displays a greater variety of moves and action one would expect if you read the comics. There is a cool scene where he uses his webs in a very spider-like manner and also I loved the nod that Spidey is the everyman hero because you see him IN COSTUME answering the cellphone, carrying a backpack, being "bored" in one scene (and what do we all do when we have a smartphone and we're bored?) and these are things we've ALL seen in the comics. The scene where he rescues the kid also reinforces this.

There is also much more development on Peter Parker the person and his background than you would expect. If you read the comics, you'll enjoy some of it as it's lifted straight from there.

The rest of the cast is awesome as well. Emma Stone has always been a solid actress and does great as Gwen Stacy. She has a good commanding presence and her chemistry with Garfield is 100x better than the chemistry between Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst (where is Kirsten Dunst anyways? Is she dead?).

Rhys Ifan does a believable job as Dr.Connors, serving not only as the story's villain but a link to the bigger overall mystery behind Parker's parents leaving as well as the mysterious Norman Osborn (who doesn't appear in the movie). Obviously his Lizard is the plodding juggernaut with a hint of predatory intellect against the young and rookie Spidey. The Lizard is handled well in this movie, I had fears he would be almost too corny, yet the movie handles him delicately and shapes his transformation and growing instability well. You can see how Connors' noble quests are twisted by his growing addiction to become this savage Lizard and be "whole and equal" (those words will make sense once you see the flick).

Denis Leary is great. Always a solid and reliable actor as well as Martin Sheen and Sally Field. Sheen doesn't quite carry the loveable connection that Cliff Robertson's (RIP) Uncle Ben does but he carries the role well providing the "working man" contrast to Peter's chaotic and scientific world. Sally Field plays a younger Aunt May and though she isn't displayed in long portions in the flick you can no doubt instantly relate and care for her as she casts real emotion every time you see her. Once again as a nod to Ultimate Spider-man, we see a younger and "hipper" Aunt May.

The film cinematography is off the wall. Garfield does a great job as a witty and charming Spidey. Cracking jokes both with his mouth and with his actions as the Webhead.

Is it the BEST Spider-man film? In my opinion, I still think Spider-man 2 is overall a better quality film, assisted by the stellar performance of Alfred Molina as Doc Ock, but the Amazing Spider-man is VERY close. The casting is almost picture-perfect and makes you eager to see who will pop up as which characters next. The film is GRITTY and slightly dark (think the original TMNT live-action movie), with touches of being Twilight-esque but possibly because of the teen drama and these are curt-tailed by the action scenes and the backdrop of responsibility, life & death, etc.

Go see the Amazing Spider-man, it's a story we all know and love, and some will say they've seen this one before...but certainly not like this!

Oh and there were a ton of Asians in my theater too...what is it with Asians and Spider-man? The movie blew records overseas in Japan!

Best review so far!

Re: The Amazing Spider-Man

The people complaining about no JJJ are too funny, where would you have put him in the movie? They actually are taking their time in this film to develop the characters, now that a few are gone, there is room for him in the sequel. Also :

a.) waiting a bit longer to recast after Simmons is a good thing

b.) newspapers don't hire 17 yr old kids in high school

c.) Peter had no time for work

d.) there was no reason for JJJ because Peter failed at getting pics

After Pete sees the Daily Bugle with a "Reward for photos of Lizard" he attempts to get said photos in the sewer but is bested and Connors destroys his camera. Clearly this was foreshadowing that Pete will be indeed taking his work to the Bugle in the near future.

Re: The Amazing Spider-Man

I didn't mind the crane scene. Nor any of those scenes in the other movies. I wanted more of that. I wanted more of New York supporting, or hating Spidey.

Re: The Amazing Spider-Man

The Crane was a bit corny but it and the news coverage of the Oscorp battle was the city's first glimpse of Spiderman the hero, rather then Spiderman the fugitive vigilante. Up until that point, they only knew that Cpt. Stacey wanted him caught for criminal activity.

^My review, if any of you are interested.

Anyway, I liked it. Garfield was great. It's second to Spider-Man 2 to me. But I liked it better than the original Sam Raimi Spider-Man so I think they are off to a great start.

Though say what you will given the context, but I hated the fact that Spidey got shot after Capt. Stacy let him go. The spider-sense should have helped him dodge it, but I guess they needed to show what kind of grit Spider-Man is made of and just what he will sacrifice.

Re: The Amazing Spider-Man

No reason to recast JJ. Simmons is arguably the most close to comic to screen gold thats been in any comic based movie. Put him in the next movie.

Word. He was absolutely perfect.

But they will recast...to keep the universe as different from Raimi's as possible.

yeah I really hope they do, J. K. Simmons is amazing, easily my favorite part of the Raimi movies

Re: The Amazing Spider-Man

No he doesn't...it'll be interesting to see if they revisit that.

In the comics, Spider-man confronts him later and he has a heart attack and dies when realizing that Peter Parker and Spider-man are one and the same.

During the final scenes of the movie, you do see that Peter has the WANTED poster tacked up on his bulletin board.

Yeah it'll be an nice growing moment for Parker when we see what he decides to do with him.

that bothered me. maybe hes going to be a villian soon.:dunno

Maybe, if they went that route it would be a better set up than randomly making Sandman the one.

Re: The Amazing Spider-Man

as the film. it's a good not a great movie..of course you can say good things about it sense there have already been 3 previous movies about Spiderman and as a studio remaking a movie .why not make corrections to it to have a cash cow..the movie left a lot of holes for me..i see this movie being redone in another 5 years..

Re: The Amazing Spider-Man

I think it boils down to Feige, who's already gone on record as saying they'd treat Stark like Bond if RDJ dropped out. So if when the time comes to re-up, which I'm thinking is after IM3 (since Hulk counts), it'll be all about the Benjamins.

He'll probably want the same deal he got before. Percentage, and I'm sure they'll give it to him.

Re: The Amazing Spider-Man

It was a good movie but not better than Spidey 1 and 2. I thought there wasn't enough aspects of Amazing Spider-Man in this movie. No Daily Bugle, no JJJ and, most importantly, Uncle Ben never said with great power there must also come great responsibility. They eluded to it but it was never really said. This bared some resemblence to a Spider-Man movie but to me it didn't have enough aspects of Spider-Man in it. As it was brought up before, this was closer to Ultimate Spidey which is only an issue if this was called Amazing Spider-Man, which it was. That's not a good thing. There was nothing Amazing about this film except Emma Stone, the Lizard and Dennis Leary.

The recent movies, especially Marvel Studios, implementing many aspects of the Ultimate universe makes this point ring hollow for me.

I agree with this. I feel another 10 mins of length with a scene or two would have added that little bit extra. It really did remind of the scene at the end of the first spider-man when the new yorkers are throwing things at Goblin and yelling at him, one of my favorite parts of that movie. Spider-man was always a citys hero and they knew it, it's just the media and police always painted him in a bad light. I'd like to see some more of that Juxtaposition in future films.
