Great question.

Japan Olympics is the key here.

In 2018 4K tv will start ramping up in Japan/SKorea.

Remember that if they wanted they could release a 12-16K tv in the next few years, the tech is the easy part.

Also remember that Japan was testing 1080p in the 80's!!! :horror

Anyways, it will be a slow trickle out of the east as usual.

Ok so 8K demos should start appearing in stores in 2019 with blurays set to arrive in 2020-2021. Tech is now moving fast.

If the TV/Bluray tech is expensive the only reason will be greed as the resolution increase has already been locked down and is costing the companies very little to reproduce. Not talking about HDR just resolution, the HDR side of the tech will remain the same.

Only true high cost is on the broadcast/internet delivery infrastructure side of things which is seperate than the TV/Bluray tech.

Enjoy your 4K discs for another 3 years lol

Jeez imagine Star Wars movies in 8K :drool :thud:

Maz's face will be truly horrifying scarier than Pennywise lol

After 8K I just won't give a crap anymore they've got enough of my money.

My eyes and enjoyment of the movie will not benefit from 16K.

It gets to a point where reinvesting into movies just becomes too over the top regardless of your income level.

Maybe after 8K we'll get VHS releases again lol

But seriously if you haven't invested in 4K yet my recommendation it to just wait!

Going from 1080pHD to 8K will be truly noticeable especially with the rumor that 3D will be making a big comeback with the 8K format.

They're hardly even making true 4K content for UHD as it is. It's mostly 2k up scaled. Most of it does look good, but not true 4K, so I doubt much will come of 8K.

LOL at laughing Kennedy with Lucas chin! :lol

Yeah and I remember how cool it was that Cameron specifically made a point to have every single monitor and TV screen in ALIENS be 16:9 just so that his film wouldn't immediately be dated with antiquated aspect ratios. His film obviously ended up being *way* more ahead of its time than he anticipated which is really quite cool especially since the onscreen tech plays well even in 2017.

Gates please don't stand in the way of progress I want my 8K Battle Beyond the Stars.

So easy to make fun of Cameron today but there was a time when he was untouchable.

I'm also loving my Lucas Kennedy lol

Yeah Apple TV will get 4K/HDR plus the Amazon/Vudu app.

Also, existing purchases will apparently be available in 4K, so one could assume it will be the same for 8K etc.

At what point does it outstrip our ability to tell the difference? 4K already relies on a precise set of conditions doesn't it?

Yeah for a phone 4K is plenty.

Don't get me wrong 4K is gorgeous.....seek out the "Sony Sushi 4K demo" considered to be one of the best filmed 4K demos in the industry.

But 8K is like removing the the screen off the tv and you could just walk right in.

Because with the 8K will come those modular puzzle screens where you connect them together up to a 200" inch tv lol.

Say goodbye to those projectors.

Man I can't even imagine what'd it be like to watch a horror movie and have it look like Annabelle is literally just across the living room from you. I guess we'll know how that guy felt at the end of The Ring, lol.

At least 4K TV's are already cheap so the early adopters won't get burned *too* badly once 8K comes out.

And the current 4K library would still look awesome on an 8K TV especially if it upscales.

Khev just hit the nail on the head, the key point why 8K is not far away.

4K is crazy inexpensive and that happened rather quickly.

The TV dudes need a high end product asap.

Enter 8K.

I'm all for 8K if they can get the price to a fair starting point and the 3D is improved. I love that with 8K the pixels are packed in so densely that we can't detect the space between them. Awesome!

I don't care much about resolution, I still play 240p videogames for crying out loud. I do however, can't wait for OLED prices to go down, since I really would appreciate calibrating a display with true blacks.

The big discussion behind the scenes is about the burn in issues with OLED same as it was with Plasma.

While I appreciate OLED I have seen LED that look just as pleasing to my eyes as OLED does.
