Oh, I agree that RR has responsibility for shoddy elements of Episode 1 (like fight scene execution), but I think he's pretty much blameless for Fett's characterization since he had nothing to do with the Tusken backstory that's actually driving it.Plus it was Filoni who directed the Season 1 episode that showed Fett's boots coming into frame, then Favreau stripped him of his gear and gave it to Cobb, then according to Rodriguez he was brought in as a last minute replacement for whoever was originally supposed to direct "The Tragedy." Then RR made Fett's assault on the Stormies this huge slaughter that wasn't in the script that he choreographed himself so who knows what that episode would have been like had he not come aboard.
Still though, it's hard not to be immensely disappointed with RR regardless. Unless he comes out and publicly states that he had to fight Favreau to prevent BOBF from somehow being even *more* terrible then I've got to imagine that he shares a good deal of responsibility in at least the final result of Episode 1.
And I tend not to blame Favreau because I associate him (maybe wrongly, I admit) with creating and developing a lot of the new characters like Din, Greef, Cara, and Gideon. But when it comes to a legacy character like Fett, I gotta believe that he defers (at least somewhat) to the guy with the title of Executive Creator Director at Lucasfilm. Dave is the one who not only has a prior history writing Fett in canon, but will be the one overseeing characterization and lore long after Jon has moved on to other projects.
BTW, Filoni's Mando episode ("The Gunslinger" - which he wrote and directed) wasn't just where Fett's boots showed up, it was also the introduction of the Fennec character altogether. And as for Fett's gear going to Cobb, that's taken straight from a Wendig novel, which I doubt Favreau would've ever bothered to read. It's similar to how Favreau's name in the credits as writer of these first two BoBF episodes might be deceptive, and I'll give you a specific example why.
The character of Black Krrsantan is from the Disney-era comic books, and the reason Fett calls him a gladiator has its origins in those comics. Who do you think is more likely familiar with that material and thereby incorporating that specific character to be used later: Jon? Or Dave? And don't get me wrong, I dig the character and look forward to more; all I'm saying is that the name on the credits can be misleading when assigning responsibility to certain aspects.
