I don't have a major problem with TLJ, but it's amazing the similarities between what happened with it and Dr Who - and how both Lucasfilm and the BBC allowed their respective director/showrunner to go rogue. It's like they were both promised a whole new millennial audience if they'd only jettison the old white male installed base.

These ROTJ throne room scene analysis are fun to read. My 'hot take' on Luke's throwing away his lightsaber was not that Luke chose inaction or trusted his fate to the force but rather Luke put his trust in his father. He became more powerful than sidious in that moment not only by successfully resisting the dark side and its dark master but by showing Vader that there was an alternative to being Jedi or Sith. Luke chose to make his love, compassion and attachment his strength and it this that made Luke a better 'jedi' than Old Obi-wan and Yoda and the whole PT gang. Neither constrained by the dogma of the PT jedi or the sith way he had created his own philosophy for being a force user. Perhaps this is the path that Anakin would have taken if Qui-gon had survived.

It's just another reason why TLJ doesn't work for me on this the fourth anniversary of the galaxy wide celebrated TLJ sucks day (not practised by Khev and AJP and Jye when they remind him). In that alternative version Luke shuts himself off from family and friends and retreats into the ancient jedi texts looking for an answer. He became a PT jedi and that's a path I could never see Luke from OT take.

Yeah, I've made peace with wiping out the EU history of Han and Boba and accepting the fact that it's now nothing more than a weekend adventure for Boba. But I guess Filoni/Rodriguez.whoever has other intentions

The EU really enriched SW for me. I don't think we can ever go back to that with all the damage that has been done.

But you and Rian Johnson definitely think alike because it was older Luke who temporarily chose an alternative to being Jedi or Sith.

I agree with this part. I always thought Luke was appealing to the good still in his father, as he mentioned earlier.

Similarly, I took that line as directed at the Emperor but the subtext was for Vader -- more like, I can stand against you... and so can my Dad.
