The robot on the recliner is called a Dalek. They are Dr.Who main villians and all they wanna do is exterminate the human race and the universe and whatnot.

They're really annoying and I hate them!

Here's an interesting tidbit about the Daleks. According to Wikipedia, the designer originally assigned to the serial that introduced them in 1963 was Ridley Scott, later a famed film director. However, a problem with Scott's schedule meant that he was replaced by Raymond Cusick, who was thus given the task of realising the Dalek creatures.
