Re: The Dark Knight Rises

Yeah, most film schools these days have changed all their filmmaking degrees to "digital" filmmaking. It's definitely the new way.

I would partly agree that it does suck. But it is a cheaper way of filmmaking. The only difference visually with film vs digital is really true IMAX now. Digital cameras can produce some really nice product though. Especially the Red camera system. Pretty awesome stuff.

Film is dying, an albiet slow death, like it or not. The ARRI's are impressive too. A lot higher than RED's though.

Yeah, the degree I'm working towards is Bachelor of Science in Digital Filmmaking. It's got everything wrapped in it, thought the main focus is on digital film.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

Okay, :dunno

In 1940 Paramount V US, was a case against major motion picture studios to stop buying out theater chains and exclusively showing only their movie.

This has gotten more lax since the 80's and studios have started buying shares/purchasing movie theater chains again.

Cineplex- Universal
Mann Theaters- WB
Pacific Theaters- Disney

But ya, you're right. Not true at all.

And the only chain I've heard of in that list is Mann. There was one Mann theater in my home town back in the 80s. What about Harkins, Cinemark and Edwards? Studios own those too? Oh, and Mann theaters went out of business in 2011. So the Decurion Corporation is part of Disney?

If studios own most of the chains then why do theaters have to PAY for the movies they show?

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

I've never heard of Cinemark or Harkins. It's the area you or I live in.

Of course not EVERY single theater chain is owned by a theater. There is a lot of independent theaters yes. But the major ones (like the ones I already listed) or owned/have significant shares in the theater chains.

The point is, if say, most theater chains bought the rights to distribute The Avengers a HUGE money maker. (like they will/already have). Disney isn't just gonna let the theater play any ads they want to in front of the film. If WB wanted to have the TDKR trailer in front of The Avengers they would have to pay some cash as they are competing forces.

Maybe, but all the theater chains you listed are in Cali right? If so that makes sense, but then you can't say that studios own most of the theaters so they can show only their movies.

Showing only their movies would be a bad business move. (And still against the law) If a studio theater chain (like pacific) doesn't have to buy the rights to show the Avengers (as it is Disney owned) but also is making off money from another film they had to buy the rights to, like TDKR. They are making money off the showings off it as well.

Most of the time theaters buy films in percentage of box office intake. If the Pacific theaters chain purchased TDKR for say 20% (completely unrealistic :lol)box office intake, then they would be making money off it and The Avengers.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

Avengers...YAWN...DKR is THE motion picture of the year.....know what I mean?

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

True and agreed. Still, I love Iron Man, awesome movie imo.

I also really enjoyed Iron Man. I think it was really good at being what it was trying to be, just a fun, solid superhero flick. The Avengers from what I can gather is going to be the ultimate version of that sort of film, relentless action, plenty of drama, and just pure blockbuster entertainment (at least that's what i'm expecting to see).

I think the Nolan movies aim to be a bit more than that, they can almost be described as art movies in the guise of a summer blockbuster. They make you think and that's what I guess really draws me to them. I hope TDKR can live up to that.
