Re: The Dark Knight Rises

to say that superhero movies should be fun, is to put them into a box that is not fair

Um, yeah, of course . . . to expect superhero flicks to be fun is stupid.

I think you've put the film on that pedestal I was talking about.

Do you read superhero comic books?

Been reading them for years . . . for fun and entertainment. If I want a deep meditation on the human condition, I'll stick to Conrad, Dostoyevsky, Faulkner, et al.

If so, why would you think "TDKR will undoubtedly be of high quality"?

Because Nolan makes very well-crafted films. That's not a complicated or contradictory concept. The Prestige was a superb movie. What I'm taking about with TDK was its tone. Its relentlessly dour and humorless tone.

And did you really think TDK was that somber?

I think it tried too hard to be self-importantly downbeat in a late-80s-and-90s "ultra-gritty and dark comics are sooo kewl" way. That's a line of thought I've never bought into.

When Rachel got blown up, there were no fanboy tears for me.
I felt like "Good! She was more of a plot device than a real character anyway." Thus, Harvey's motivation to go schizo seemed hollow, the Joker's turning of him seemed forced and unbelievable, and Dent's death had no impact on me. The "O tortured souls!" angle has become a cliche in itself. (Raimi's Spidey flicks suffer from this as well.)

Yes, Batman is a tortured, misunderstood, and self-sacrificing hero. I get it. I "got it" 25 years ago from Frank Miller.

I just don't find it a very deep or interesting observation. I can see the appeal to the teen angst of a young audience that feels outcast and marginalized, but as an older adult I want to feel ebullient and energized by my superhero flicks. The real world is bleak enough.
Teen angst is for, well...teens.

I don't need my escapism to aspire to timeless literature.
That just seems pretentious.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

It really was void, I don't get how the midnight show for Avengers was pure excitement and 19 hours later it was a lame duck quiet audience.

Midnight show TDKR trailer and Avengers movie brought down the house.

I mean, I do get it, the midnight show are for the fanatics, but I didn't expect just 19 hours later with a sold out theater to be dead, they didn't even clap or laugh in Avengers, how is that even possible.

I enjoy being amongst energetic fans in a theater, hate it when I get people with no souls. :lol

Going to 3rd viewing of Avengers today while wife goes shopping, hope I get a great crowd.

Nam, don't be late. :lol
yeah thats weird, is like, i was watching Waiting or clerks 2 laughing my butt off at times, laughing a lot, and the entire theater dead silent, sometimes they would laugh a little bit, but i couldnt stop laughing, and i was the only one laughing out loud.. I get that they might not be the best movies ever or anything, but barely anyone laugh

Very possible. I am looking forward to TDKR and have really enjoyed the TDK series so I think this one will be fun. However, the bar has been set high by just how good the Avengers is.

i really think Rises will be okay, i really dont worry for rises, i think it will totally fine :1-1:

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

Avengers/Marvel deserve all the love, respect and TDK size box office (which is happening, first for Marvel) because the movie kicks serious ass. It's fun, witty, exciting and action packed, what's not to love.

But I don't get all the hate towards Nolan/TDKR and his diehard fans lately.

Thank you Joss Whedon and Christopher Nolan for giving me an excellent summer.

Well, I hope Nolan didn't drop the ball, don't know yet.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

I'm really hoping that they do a 3 part marathon like The Avengers did, I may be in a ____ town, but you bet your Bat-asses that I'd drive a few hours for a Nolan Batman IMAX trilogy event. :lecture

Thought I would upload my thoughts on the trailer Freaks! See what you think.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

I'm not feeling that vibe at all. The Return of the King trailer had this monumental feeling.

I gotta quit frequenting message boards. When I saw this new trailer I was like "great, this is cool, it's much better than the last one". I loved the little Batman moments and Bruce in the well. Then I see other fellow fans comments and it seems like hyperbole, especially on SHH.

"I cried", "the equivalence of a Picasso painting", "as epic as Return of the King", "Oscar material" and loads and loads of pretentious bull____. Not to mention the little snide comments against the Avengers.

It just seriously sours the experience for me. It makes me question my tastes of not just film, but more importantly, Batman. What's so mind blowingly brilliant about the trailer? There were some great money shots like the bridges and Batman, the dialogue was better but what puts this above the rest?

Was it, "My mother warned me about getting into cars with strange men", "this isn't a car"? That's about the equivalence of that "simple, just fun, nothing special" Avengers quote, "I have an army", "we have a Hulk". I'm not even a Marvel fan and I think that exchange is better.

Been wondering where you've been lately so I looked for your last post, and found this. ^^^

And you tell me I take stuff too seriously. :/

I agree there is little difference between the "I have an army", "we have a Hulk" and "this isn't a car" lines. But I also feel that the tone of the DKR trailer feels more heavy and moving than anything I've seen from Avengers.

I haven't seen Avengers yet, but I fully expect to love it. And it's getting great reviews. But I don't expect to be deeply moved by it. So far both of Nolan's Batman movies have been profoundly moving for me, not just fun. The latest trailer gives me a strong feeling that will be the case again. I think the way they drop out sound except for dialogue might be what makes it such a great trailer for me.

What is pretentious about being more moved by one movie/trailer than another movie/trailer? I didn't cry for the trailer, but it did give me chills. Is that pretentious? I cried for both Nolan Bat movies but not for a single marvel movie (except maybe Spiderman 2). Is that pretentious?

If you don't like the way some fans express their excitement, there's no reason to get upset with them for it, and it's certainly no reason to question your own fandom. :peace

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

Actually, my tears were just welled up; didn't shed a drop, though I almost did. I think it was the combination of the chilling piano notes and the sense of finality that came with this trailer. You start watching it and there is this realization that hits you like a brick wall: whether or not this is the end of Bruce Wayne, it marks the end of an era. One that I am unsure will ever be topped. Suffice it to say, I think the trailer would have been much more powerful without the segment at the end. Don't get me wrong, The Bat looks cool as hell, but it just didn't retain the same epic and somber tone that was so prevalent in the rest of the trailer.

A somber movie can still have jovial spots.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

I know, I'm just saying that it didn't really fit. There weren't any other jovial spots in the trailer, and that's why I thought it felt out of place. It was really dark and powerful throughout the entirety of the trailer, and I just felt like the scene was almost superfluous, even in composition it seemed like an afterthought meant to showcase Batman's latest and greatest "toy." That didn't really contribute anything.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

The new trailer does give me goosebumps, and im very excited for the movie, i expect a very long, epic and grandscale story, but i just dont know if it will be better than the dark knight, its the final one so it has to go all out. The batwing stuff does look awesome, the trailers artistic and well crafted.

Alot of people are comparing this to the avengers and thats fine, but i have scene the Avengers and its just so different from this its hard to even compare in my mind, its almost 2 different genres. You cant describe them.

I hope this Nolan IMAX Trilogy Marathon happens, thats a great idea and if warners doesnt do it ill be very upset LOL.

I want epic hand to hand combat with Batman and Bane.
