Burton seems to be stuck in a rut

Cameron has gone full Avatard

Spielberg has just gone (though he may reinvigorate my interest with Lincoln, and Tintin was actually great)

I never considered Lucas great

The Directors I'm drawn to currently are Nolan, Fincher, Aronofsky and I guess Ridley Scott

But I still watch whatever films appear to be entertaining from the trailers or have good reviews

I completely forgot about those two :lol

But I feel their best is behind them

I think Fincher, Nolan and Aronofsky have their best yet to come fingers crossed

No one knew who Nolan was prior to Begins. There's been this great "awakening" of teenage film nerds on the internet in the past few years now that all these film sites are popping up and people are starting to appreciate indie cinema, but Memento was largely unknown by mainstream audiences prior to Begins.

No doubt having a successful superhero franchise as a feather in his cap has fast-tracked his popularity in the mainstream consciousness, but the point is, there have been great directors who have risen to the heights of popularity in the mainstream without having ever directed a superhero film. It's possible to eventually rise to that level of fame based only on the quality of your film work, not the existing popularity of the subject (in this case Batman), indeed, many of the directors mentioned in the last few pages have done just that.

There's never been a comic book movie that was successful BECAUSE of the director choice.

Batman Begins was successful, and Batman & Robin was a failure BECAUSE of the director choice, not because of the character. They were both comic book movies, heck they were both about the same character...but they went in completely different directions. Who's responsible for the "direction" of a movie? :wink1:

Just got this for free from Gamestop! :yess:

I tried to enjoy Public Enemies, I really did. The camera angles and movements killed it for me though. It just looked all wrong. I couldn't get into it.

Michael Mann annoys the piss out of me.. He does the ugliest cinematography in recent memory.

Movies should look like movies. Not high school level productions.

That's what I'm talking about. I couldn't stand that camera work. It looks like they were out there on location, filming. I mean, yeah, that's what they're doing but I shouldn't be able to "feel" that. It took me out the whole time.

Yep. Couldn't stand Maimi Vice either.

People want change and blah blah blah...but change isn't always a good thing. Digital Cameras are fine. But at least make them look like a film.

Yeah I'm with Fabio and CP on Public Enemies, I missed it in the theatres but bought the BR and then spent a week convincing my wife to watch it with me

We put it on

I fell asleep before she did :lol

I hated the camera work... It completely distracted from the film

The trailers for Public Enemies had me hyped. I was legitimately excited for it. The music. The bluegrass. The tommy guns. It looked to be Depp outside of his usual gay pirate schtick. But then it looked like a made for TV movie. I really didn't like it.

But Mann can be great. He's hit or miss but have you all seen Heat? It's amazing.
