No one knew who Nolan was prior to Begins. There's been this great "awakening" of teenage film nerds on the internet in the past few years now that all these film sites are popping up and people are starting to appreciate indie cinema, but Memento was largely unknown by mainstream audiences prior to Begins.

Did you read what others have posted here? I knew about "Memento." I had never seen it. It was on a list of films I wanted to watch. It got immediate priority over all others after I saw BB.

And these Nolanites here that don't own or haven't seen "Following?" You disgust me :monkey4 :lol

yeah but did you watch Iron Man solely because Happy Hogan directed it?

Yes I really did. I hated the original SM and X-Men so Marvel had nothing going at the time. I'm a guy that chooses movies very often by director. It's how I got into film, watching all the works of Kubrick, Scorsese, Tarantino and going down the line. At the time I was a fan of Swingers and Made, as well as Jon in various other roles like Larry Sanders.

I think the only films I'll watch by director are Kubrick (and those are done) and the Coen Brothers. With the case of The Master (BECAUSE of there will be blood), this applies to PTA as well.

why? because they've never made a bad film (recently). Or even a mediocre film. I guess sure Barry Lyndon isn't that good and The Ladykillers isn't either but at least I knew what those films were going into No country for old men.

I'm actually a bit of a hypocrite in what I said because I'm a huge follower of McG's work.

He was the reason I attended Terminator Salvation. GREAT work.

Eh Barry Lyndon is by no means a bad movie. And heck I even saw Lady Killers in the theatre but yea it's one of the weaker ones.

I go by Kubrick, Scorsese, Tarantino, PTA, Wes Anderson, Coens, Nolan (saw Memento and Insomnia in theatres), Terry Gilliam, David Fincher, Ridley Scott, etc.

You've just listed is a typical list of every director that film students are made aware of.

Needs more Michael Bay.

Are you done with Spielberg?

I payed money to see The Terminal. :monkey2

:lol

Seriously though I don't look remotely forward to his films like I use to, but overall I still give the guy credit, he's done a ton of iconic and truely awesome movies, way more then Lucas.

I guess that's somewhat reassuring, hopefully they learn a thing or two.

^ That's where I come in. :yess:

I can't wait to go to film school next year, and when they ask who my favorite director is, i'll say Michael Bay.

Peter Berg is not in the same level. Battleship was Hasbro trying to get someone to copy Bay exactly.

Not his fault.

Oh, i'll add a bunch of french artsy auteur ____s as well. And then throw in Bay right in the middle...so they'll all go...

This is some pickle we've found ourselves in.

Honestly, I think we put too much merit into the directors. They're an important ingredient, even the main ingredient most times, but I dunno. I'm more of a fan of the completed work, not the guys behind them. I love films but I don't fancy myself some film buff. I like what I like, that's pretty much it.

Needs more Tim Burton.

I keep coming back to Tim Burton like a battered ex wife. In the 90's he was my favorite director. When I was an impressionable lad first taking an interest in film, I remember watching Batman, Batman returns, Beetlejuice, Scissorhands, Nightmare (I know he didn't direct it before you correct me) and Burton was the man. He inspired me to draw and to write and to be different. Sorry to say everything he makes now is crap. I've given everything a chance until Dark Shadows but I'm sick of this Burton/Depp fairy nonsense.

Nolan has not made a film yet I didn't like. In fact, apart from "Insomnia," Nolan hasn't made a film yet that I didn't love. He didn't write that one, he just directed it. I'll let that one slide.

Here's my order:
BB > Inception > TDK > The Prestige > Memento > Following > Insomnia

I am personally more excited for Nolan's next project than the Batman reboot. Err, as long as it's not that Howard Hughes biopic. That sounds boring! :lol

Gotta disagree, director is very important for me. When you look at my DVD collection it's almost full of directors bodies of works with very few one offs in between.

I don't think it'd be boring but he'd be hard pressed to one up The Aviator.
