From Empire

There was a lot of speculation as to who would be the bad guy in the sequel to the phenomenal The Dark Knight. Fan reaction seemed to be centered on The Riddler and as it turns out WB executives had a similar train of thought.

Batman-News.com had the details on an interview that David S. Goyer did with Empire magazine about the details.

At the premiere for The Dark Knight in 2008 he says the studio already had their mind made up. They said, “it’s gonna be The Riddler, and we want it to be Leonardo DiCaprio…”

The same interview confirms that Nolan and Goyer didn't even know how the movie would go or who the villain would be until the fall of that year, but they did know how the film would end and Goyer says it hasn't changed from their original conception. "When Goyer saw that final scene from The Dark Knight Rises, he got a lump in his throat

That's odd though because there're interviews with Nolan saying that Ledger's passing was a shame as the Joker was to be explored more (like origin explored) in TDK's sequel. :huh

They don't know what the ____ they wanted. :lol

In fairness, Heath's death an the movie's grossing had a lot of press on Nolan and co about what's next and I'm sure they said things at time just to shut people up and move on.

Goyer is such a hack. One of the worst things about the popularity of these films is the credit he gets for them. It'd no coincidence that the film he was most involved with (BATMAN BEGINS) has a pretty damn bad script, particularly in the 2nd half. And his MAN OF STEEL script had to be constantly reworked by others, including during filming. He blows.

I hate him, he is responsible for some really crap movies,

the thing I really dont get is why does Nolan bother with him? wtf? seriously why does Nolan work with him?

Pshh you mean the call of dutys? Wow those are so engaging ya know.

That being said - I do agree Goyer appears to be the weakest link between the Nolans and him.

It was always my understanding that Goyer was more of a consultant on the scripts because the Nolan's didn't know ____ about the comics and Goyer did.

Not the script, that's for damn sure. The Rachel character (created by Goyer) is literally painful to read in that script. She sucks. Just like him.

I'm still gonna disagree. Begins was a more fluid story. Dark Knight wasn't sure who was what and was far too busy to be coherent at times.

That's probably the case with TDK and TDKR, but was originally Goyer's baby. Nolan improved upon and beefed up Wayne's backstory, but the st of it (including Rachel Dawes and the silly water vaporizing nonsense) was all Goyer.
