There is a difference between scaring off and defeating.

Exactly, they made it a fight in the films but in the books S just takes a run for it. That alone should confirm that he was no match for even Gandalf the Grey in his Necromancer form.

In the books I think Sauron did that because it was easier to keep it secret he was back. In the movie he's probably thinking keeping Gandalf in the cage will give him the time he needs.

Yeah, why did they get confused and light headed in Mirkwood, I figured it was a lack of Oxygen and too much concentrated evil in one spot.

It probably has to do with the fact the woods have become poisoned and it could be floating in the air.

In the book Gandalf "scares" him off, then G comes back with the White Council, so, incorrect. gandalf the Grey would most certainly be able to thwart a formless, One Ring-less Sauron. Also auto correct just tried to turn "gandalf" into "gangland," made me giggle.

Sauron did not want to reveal his true self yet, thats why he left...Saruman did not want to chase him away either initially...but when Saruman thought that Sauron was getting close to finding the ring in the Anduin, he and the White Council made sure he was evicted from Dol Guldur:lecture

It was because it was PJ's way of getting thru the Mirkwood scene quicker:gah::panic::dunno:impatient:

Something I thought of for a TABA prologue would be to show the meeting at Ered Luin that Thorin mentions when he arrives at Bag End, It would reestablish the quest at the start and also could be used to introduce Dain to set up his character instead of having him first appear at the BOTFA.

I was actually thinking the same thing. I discussed this with my friend after my second viewing, and said that would be a good Prologue for TABA.

Anyone get the sense that Bilbo already has the Arkenstone?

At what point is Saruman in cahoots with Sauron? Before the white council meeting?

After.....

It isn't until after Sauron reveals himself that Saruman begins to dabble with black arts in an attempt to defeat Sauron, and instead becomes wrapped up in Sauron's lies.

PJ made Saruman in cohoots with Sauron...In the books Sauruman was more of a competitor for the ring...I Saruman got that ring he woulda been the next Dark Lord

I think initially Saruman was an ally to Sauron but I always got the impression that there was a certain sense of rivalry between the two. When Gandalf said on Orthanc "There can only be one lord of the rings, and he does not share power!" Saruman realized that Gandalf was right. So I think Saruman is actually kind of the same, in that he did not want to share power, he wanted the ring for himself and thus the relationship between him and Sauron always seemed a bit unstable to me.

In the books...NO WAY.I wont believe that..even in the Hobbit films Saruman the Wise..the good....even Christopher Lee Himself said it

I meant as in, The Two Towers. He communicated with Sauron and they both formed an alliance. But Saruman always had his eyes on the ring as well.

Partly right. In the movies PJ made it so Saruman wanted to pretend to be Sauron's ally, but his plan was to get the ring of power secretly and defeat Sauron.

Finally got to see this tonight, and I was blown away.

As much as I enjoyed the Hobbit, I can see me rewatching this one more.

Smaug was great, from the look to the voice, still feeling impressed by the movie and may hve to see it again this weekend.

The biggest surprise was Beorn, although I avoided threads and anything else on this movie, I had seen stills and thought they were making him into a joke character, but it actually came across pretty well and feral on film.
