Thanks for the followup post VASith. Thats a lot to absorb, but defintately helpful. Next tax filing I need to look at whether to do the standard or not. Usually don't have to many items.

No prob. :) Once you own a house you start to get more and more items. You def want to itemize on your returns...all the little things can add up quickly. Car inspection & emission tests are allowed, the tax you pay on your cars, charitable donations, uniforms for work (i get to write off my chef's whites and pants), additions made to a personal IRA savings account.....and there is a lot more.

True. My wife and I have been lucky to not have medical expenses or anything like that. We aren't self employed, I invest in my 401K but don't do trading. So really, aside from mortgage, cars, property tax and the odd donation we don't have any thing else special to list.

That's where I'm at now.
 
That is one area i don't do any more. I have a great accountant. I have way too much crap to think about than to do my taxes. And he deducts his preparation fees.

This really has been one of the most cathartic discussions for me. I have said it before, but I appreciate all the insight and history/knowlege you have all given.
