Just got back from a 7:30pm showing of the film. My rating, 6/10. The actual adaptation of The Killing Joke told in the film was superb I thought but the prologue with Batgirl was totally unnecessary and felt out of place. The *** scene involving her and Batman was just pathetic. Once again, totally unnecessary. The whole 20 minute or so prologue with her felt totally tacked on, shoehorned even. Dumb. Bruce Timm what were you thinking? And the animation was weak as well to top it off. IMHO, this has got to be one of Hamill's top performances as the Joker though.

I totally get the rationale Timm and Azzarello had with the whole Prologue. The irony is that the whole thing was basically constructed to placate the feminists who were pissed about this story being adapted, and it's so on the nose, too. Barbara Gordon is a victim of sexual violence, stripped of any power over her sexuality; Barbara Gordon is an independent woman in control of her own sexuality. Barbara Gordon is a helpless, crippled damsel; Barbara Gordon is a strong, capable heroine who saves Batman from certain death and beats a guy nearly to death while calling him a "misogynistic piece of filth." If some feminists can't tell that the whole sequence was crafted as a love letter to them by a couple of guys who were attempting to be thoughtful about a controversial work, I don't get it.

Personally, I would've cut the whole sequence. The Killing Joke is underestimated because of its length, but it isn't exactly a book that you just breeze through. It's pretty much like any other Alan Moore story in the sense that it's a relatively slow, ponderous story. Even though the actual adaptation was only about 40 minutes, it felt like 70, and the prologue just made it drag.

I think I'll attempt my own cut of the movie later on today, I'll use a video editor to try to remove the prologue and the additional bit at that ending (which was also stupid). The movie should have ended at the Batman/Joker laugh.

I felt the same way. The credits should've kept that sense of atmosphere and remained silent, throughout.

I'm not liking what I'm hearing. Maybe this will end up on one of the streaming services and I'll catch it then.

I was left feeling like there was no point, no reward no ending to the story. The opening 20 mins where horrible, the animation felt extremely dated and bad, i know why they went with this look but it missed all the marks imo. The only sort of good part was Hamill as the Joker, he nailed it again but the rest was a let down.

I really don't get all the **** the animation's getting. Generic? Kind of, but it was no worse than Under the Red Hood, and people seem to love that movie.

It's worth making up your own mind. The Killing Joke portion is awesome, and the Batgirl stuff wasn't bad, per se, albeit a little disjointed. The good thing about it being disjointed, though, is that it's easy to jump right into The Killing Joke part, which is a great adaptation. I'd recommend renting it for the latter portion alone.

I would say the end product is just a missed opportunity. To be honest, I'm not that big of a fan of the book and I thought it's just as overrated as Miller's TDKR but the animated TDKR was superb (sans Peter Weller's acting) but this- despite having Conroy, Hamill and Strong doing their absolute best, is just wasted.

I looked up online and saw that there was an ugly exchange between a fan and Brian Azzarello, and that Bruce Timm is doing damage control and admitting most of the changes came from Azzarello and he was just nodding to it all. I guess since it's not his DCAU, he doesn't have a strict code on the matter.

The best thing I could honestly say about this film is the acting, everything else comes off as sloppy and in one case, insulting.

The acting was fantastic, and I feel like the film's worth it just to see Conroy and Hamill chew on the material, alone, but I agree that it's not my favorite story, nor is it my favorite adaptation. Personally, I really want to see The Long Halloween.

I think it's partly due to many people coming in without being familiar with DC animation, which is pretty much the same quality throughout. TDKR also was criticized for the animation, but long time DC fans like you and me are just used to it.

That being said, I am kinda hampered by the lack of details that was present in the book but not in the film, particularly the ending. It looks so haunting in the book with the moonlight and hanging lights.

I just got done watching it. I didn't mind the animation (other than it being a bit dark) at all. And while the beginning did seem tacked on I just thought if it as a pre cartoon to the main feature.. overall it was pretty good.

This. I thought TLH was the best of the "must reads" of the Batman comics. I read the Killing Joke and TDKR in the 90's and thought they're fine, I certainly didn't expected them to be the bible of sorts for Batman story telling and I'm starting to get sick of all the TDKR homages in live action movies, it's like that's the only book the film makers read. They're good, but not that good.

It's definitely Jeph Loeb's best work. I'll say this, though: I'm not a big fan of Hush, and I feel like it's extremely overrated, as Batman stories go, but I do feel like it's very adaptable. I could see it being an entertaining 70 minute feature. TLH is top of my list, though. I also wouldn't mind them spreading their wings a little and doing something like Gotham by Gaslight.
