A very worrying description. When Hollywood seeks to subvert expectations it definitely sets off alarm bells these days. I’m not sure they know what that expression really means.

I can tell you what it doesn’t mean, it is not the same as taking previous movies and characters that the audience really likes and possibly grew up with and then radically changing them inorganically from what came before or even worse making the previous movies pointless (Terminator and Star Wars spring to mind).

Well the co-writer says this isn't a sequel.

"I cannot tell you what this film is about, but I could explain what it is not."
"It's certainly not yet one more sequel, but something autonomous that contains however the three Matrix that preceded in a really ingenious way. It's a very beautiful and weird creation," Mitchell teased. "It also achieves a couple of things that we do not see in action films, meaning it subverts the rules of blockbusters."
Whenever I read that some movie is doing something so intelligent or different than Hollywood, it ends up being garbage.

You know, the ''freedom to be whomever you want to be'' kind of thing... like trans people, or Cosplayers.

Where 'generic' implies rules and control, therefore you are not truly free if you are ordinary.

I'm coming around to this movie... but I sure hope it doesn't feel like some kind of lecture on diversity and inclusion.

I hope its more like Rogue One and less like The Force Awakens.
