My attitude before my missus brought one home: why bother, what does it do that my macbook and iPhone don't already do? It's an expensive gimmick Steve Jobs is trying to create a hyped demand for.
My attitude after the missus brought one home: wow, the interaction with the device is so seductive and so natural. Using this device feels like an effortless and accessible way to browse the web, read magazines/newspapers/ books, catch up on work tasks and yes, play games. Sorry Steve, turns out you were right and I did actually want this after all.
And check out what the kids are getting out of it... they hardly watch tv anymore - the iPad experience is interactive engagement rather than passive reception. The intuitive navigation and closed environment means they can pick this thing up and use it without me being so concerned that they'll access stuff that will either corrupt their minds or the device's data. They are barely 2 and barely 6. This thing is not treated as an expensive toy. The iPad offers a genuine interactive, educational experience for them if we as parents set up the device with the right apps. 9 out of 10 books I buy for bedtime stories are ebooks, browsed, purchased and delivered to the device in the time it takes for them to brush their teeth.
So I'm a convert. In my case the iPad is not an inferior computer or fancy iPhone - it is a wonderful device in its own right. I couldn't imagine living in a technologically-equipped home that didn't include an ipad.
The irony is that my missus is a luddite and I'm presumably the tech-savvy one. Despite my resistance she decided to buy the ipad after she visited some schools and saw how they were being used in the classrooms. I'm glad she did
Yeah, schools need to get in on using these in classes. I think its a tool in education many are missing out on.
For students or for teachers? It's a great tool for teachers to use but you know what kids would be doing in school with iPads haha.
Both actually. Yes, students could get into things but that would be up to the teachers to classroom manage better.
It's a great idea but then you got to get into the discussion of who would be liable if a student broke one, etc.
I'm tempted to pick up the iPad 3 but I already have my Macbook and an iPhone 4...could I really justify using the iPad on a daily basis? Hmm...
Apple's customer service is one of the reasons why people keep going back. Anyone that disagrees with that obviously hasn't experienced it.

you mean the same customer service where you have to pay an extra $150 or so for their apple care plan to even qualify, and then spend more money just to get the replacement when you already have the "apple care" plan?
Spending extra money better damn well get you good customer service.
You could make a lot of sweaters with all the sheep.
As in the optional Apple care plan that goes into effect after the 1 year warranty.
Actually their CS is hit or miss if you don't buy their apple care. I've had several instances where they have come through and several where they wanted to just charge me money. My iPhone 3GS had a speaker malfunction and the genius bar guys wanted to tell me I had water damage when my phone had never been in any sort of water. Wanted me to pay $249 for a new one. They are quick to make things up when they are told by apple not fix certain things.
I was told the 1 year warranty does not cover anything accidental. so unless your item malfunctions on it's own, youre SOL without paying MORE money.
What is so great about that? sounds pretty standard.
