Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Why can't they just leave ____ alone? Jackson had a good thing going with Lord of the Rings scope. You don't always have to be a pioneer looking to push the envelope in the latest film technology. All these gimmicks annoy the piss out of me. Can't they just make a picture without these gimmicks?

Tell the story, get the right reactions out of your cast and audience, film it like you filmed the last one. It's as simple as that.

When this project was announced, my only fear was that it would look different from Lord of the Rings. I don't know, like, too modern or new. Sort of like the Original Star Wars trilogy vs. the Prequel Trilogy. Looks like my fears have come to fruition.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I think the sky is falling. :lol :lol

Edit: In all seriousness I doubt this will be an issue in the end. As Tom said most theaters will be showing this in 24 for those who can't take change and when it comes out on Blu I bet it will be in 24 and be fine. I really think this is a lot of noise on nothing.

:lol :lol :lol

I still want to see it in 48 because that's the best presentation possible.

I just find the logic to go smooth motion digital, albeit with real frames and not just made up frames, instead of real film that worked so well for the ethereal world of middle earth just puzzling.

That being said, I will be there opening night.

PJ has more than enough earned my trust.

Who knows, the world might demand that the LOTR be converted to 48 Smooth Digital if the Hobbit becomes loved by everyone.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Yeah, I totally trust pj. I will be there at midnight and unless I hate it plan on seeing it at least 5 times in the theater.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Yep, I get to watch The Hobbit 3 different ways: 3D, 48fps, and 24fps. Good thing PJ is not into IMAX . . .

I'm sure it will be post-converted to Imax too.

I saw Return of the King in Imax...it was glorious... and the Imax here in London has weekly all nighters for the LOTR trilogy :thud:

But is there 3D-48fps and 3D-24fps?

No IMAX huh? (I don't have one near me anyway)

If it wasn't for filmmakers pushing the envelope we wouldn't have sound or color in film. :dunno

Change is good.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

We have color now and crystal clear, surround sound. The only thing we can't do is actually be inside the film and that will never happen. What else is there?

____ change.

I don't remember sitting in the theaters in 2001, 2002 or 2003, or hell even last summer when I saw the rerelease of FOTR and thinking, "hmm, there's something wrong with this picture. It needs an update."

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

:lol

How much film has changed and is changing, there's no stopping it. Of course directors like PJ are gonna utilize new tech. Why wouldn't they? Makes no sense to be mad at them for doing so.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I refuse to take sides. :nono

DiFabio is right.

Funny part is, i'm a huge 3D digital techno junkie who actually enjoys watching some movies with smooth motion turned on to high.

I just can't picture Middle Earth looking like Good Morning America and Jay Leno. :lol

____ it, I bet it's going to look awesome in 3D. :lol

I'm all for change and improvement but analogue will always ALWAYS ALWAYS be > Digital

So technologies like IMAX need to be invested in before 48fps digital 3D nonsense.

If I had to pick just one theater format.

Imax Film.

Even for When Harry Met Sally part 2. :lol

And sadly, it seems to be dying off. It's cheaper to do it digitally now. $$$$$$$$

I'm no film expert but I can tell when there's something "wrong" with what I'm seeing. I know where those descriptions are coming from and I know exactly what they're talking about. I could see if one reviewer mentioned it, but it's totally widespread.

It's probably just me, but I think the technical and effects aspect of film has gone about as far as it can go. It's time to take it back a bit and the only way to do that his through old fashioned film. I don't really like the look of most modern movies anymore. There's too much "magic" ____ in it, orby, techy stuff. Basically effects for the sake of effects. I'm not an ADD, 8 year old boy. While I want the canvass of the screen to be filled with beautiful, provoking imagery, I don't need everything to be thrown into my face. Some of the best shots in LOTR were that of the New Zealand landscape. I can get lost in a film without 48 faps or ____ing glasses.

I guess you could say this started with Star Wars and George Lucas but I don't remember scoffing at the developments of cinema of the past. I'm all for a blending of practical and digital effects as well as advancements in film but current trends haven't caught my interest at all.

I miss that grittiness of older films. The Blade Runner feel, the Terminator feel, the Alien feel, the Star Wars feel. Why don't movies have that anymore? They felt more engrossing and relatable, like worlds I could actually visit. Compare that to now with all this showy, awkward stuff where everything is super clean, crisp and boring. A world where ____ is flying and hovering all over the place like ____ing pixies.

Them kids and their damn rock and roll and fancy shmancy television sets!

Nah, but really. The only way to progress is to learn from experience. Same thing with film. I can't see FPS upage being a huge catch on like 3D though.
