Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

A completist’s cinematic tour of the LOTR world might include Tolkien’s Silmarillion, a collection of universe-building mythology edited and posthumously published by Tolkien’s son Christopher in 1977. The problem, Jackson says, is in who controls the rights to the work. “The Silmarillion is the big volume, but that’s owned by the Tolkien estate," he said. "It’s not owned by Warner Bros. or MGM — and I don’t think the Tolkien estate are very fond of these movies, so I wouldn’t expect to see The Silmarillion any time soon.”

Makes it sound like a long shot and a game of waiting. But it could happen some day.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Yes WB, along with ANY studio will never have the rights.

"The rights belong to Tolkien estate. And they seem to hate these movies."

Paraphrasing PJ himself here at SDCC.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

WB got the rights in the fallout between MGM and Newline Cinema. Tolkien sold the rights for both books to MGM back in the 1970's.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Because the Tolkien Estate owns the rights and as PJ said they hate these movies. A grandson of Tolkien got kicked out of the family basically for saying he liked them and appearing in one. CT will I'm sure make sure these never see the light of day on the big screen. These are never going to happen and at the very least never gonna happen in our lifetimes.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I don't think anyone better than Peter Jackson could've done these movies justice, so I'm surprised to hear that as well.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

What I don't get is that JRR Tolkien sold the rights for both books to MGM back in the 1970's (according to Pix above) when whatever they would have made would be pure crap.

Surly what PJ did is better than what Tolkien would have expected back then. I think the Tolkien estate are being a-holes and maybe they will wise up in time.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I suppose they could sell the rights and make millions, so they could be worse.

I don't get why he hates them either and assume its basically him just being a jerk but until he is no longer with us, and maybe someone else within the family is a bit softer we have no chance.

If it's like most families with money, they'll be a mad dash to see who can reap the most out of it.
