Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Different strokes for different folks but its not that bad. It didn't bother me at all. That's also supposed to be in 3D so it's going to look funky without the glasses so the point your proving or trying to prove doesn't quite work unless they have the glasses.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

I wonder if the drop in NA is due to x-mas shopping. I know I wouod love to see it again.

It could be anything really. It's still making a ton of money and we don't have to worry about there being another one. :lol

I have to wonder how it would've done in May.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Well if it holds we will find out as TABA will come out in the summer of 2014.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

I saw The Hobbit again last night, this time taking my parents. I still have some problems with the film.

The first third of the film is really rather boring. To those who aren't die hard Tolkien fans, they will be bored. I mean, I enjoyed it for them most part, but I would've trimmed some of the dwarves antics out.

My parents loved LOTR and list them among some of their favorite movies, but they didn't care for The Hobbit. They cited the slow pace, lack of urgency, over-the-top antics, and unrealistic scenes as big distractions. They only got into the film around the Rivendell scenes.

My mom singled out Radagast, the Great Goblin ("That'll do it."), the escape from the Goblins, the stone giants, and the deux ex Gandalf all as moments she rolled her eyes. I tend to agree. They loved the scenes with Gollum, but that was about all the praise they could give the film.

Oh, and if that is the Witch King of Angmar in The Hobbit, his crown is not the same as it is in the LOTR films.

Interesting observations there, AK....I'm in the same camp as your folks I guess.

Just saw this today...I didn't hate it...it just didn't click for me...I didn't get pulled into it the way I did with the LOTR films.

I checked the time a lot during the movie...it just didn't seem paced very well. If I had to name a few things that didn't seem to work for me...it was the lack of "majesty" and heart. The scenes where we spend a lot of time swooping through the landscape just seemed designed to max out a 3D effect instead of establishing a landscape or environment. The action was over-the-top in a lot of places...I never felt any "danger" for the characters. It kept bringing to mind "Temple of Doom" or "Crystal Skull" or Jackson's own "King Kong"...action for the sake of action, not to establish danger or suspense. Just pure eye candy with no feeling behind it.....just something to fill the movie with.

None of these characters had any spark or charisma to them to pull you through the adventure...Freeman tried, but each time it started to take off with him a bit, off he went to the sidelines again...he was really no more than a supporting character to his own adventure. There was no Viggo, providing a spark to the proceedings. Even Gandalf seemed to be just going through the motions in this...pulling out the same tricks from the last films almost by route. It was no wonder that the scenes with characters we "knew" from the other films (Galadriel, Elrond, Saruman) bought a much-needed jolt to the movie (although I did chuckle at the visual conceit that this "story" takes place 60 years prior to the "ring" movies and everyone looks considerably older here....ah, the magic of movies, eh?)

There was a scene or two that almost popped the movie out of the doldrums...the "mountain men" fight was pretty stunning...but again, even during that scene...there was never any sense that any of the characters were in any danger...heck, there were so many dwarfs...couldn't a few have ended up dead along the way to establish some stakes here?

And was it just me or....did this movie feel a litle more geared towards kids more? The "stooge"-like antics of the three trolls, the buffoon-silliness of the goblin king....pretty light stuff for this kind of story...or maybe not.

I'll see this again...maybe it'll "play" better for me a second time....but this trip back to middle earth just didn't work on it's initial run for me...cheers to those that are diggin' it....

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Agen's parents definitely saw the same movie I did. That "that'll do it" line and scene with the GK almost made me laugh out loud but for the wrong reasons.

Jedibear, you read my mind and wrote the kind of review I would have. Yes the book (read it a couple times) does have a more child-like read to it compared to LOTR but the movie took that to the extreme. As far as seeing it again, you're braver than I am. I can't even imagine sitting thru this a second time.

A little of out of left field here; but was i the only one who didn't like Balin? I'm not sure why, he just came off as a passive-agressive ******* version of santa.

He is Thorin's right hand man. They usually are that way.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

So I gave the film a chance....and wasn't very impressed. Definitely felt more child-friendly (in an aggravating way) and none of the characters were very intriguing to me. As someone else said above, some of the actors looked a bit bored with the roles. The SFX really didn't look as good as I expected after how long it's been since LotR. Found it a bit boring and honestly rather forgettable.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

The book was definitely more child-friendly than the LOTR trilogy. I mean, I think I read The Hobbit in 4th grade. I enjoyed the movie for the most part cuz I went in remembering how different of a read The Hobbit was compared to the others. The film was what I expected it would be.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Saw it yesterday for 3rd and last time in theaters...loved it even more...cannot wait to own it in all 4 versions like LOTR,TE in Reg ED and BR and EE in Reg Ed and BR

Very much so. The movie does a perfect job of capturing the first six chapters and the feel of those chapters. The movie will start getting a little darker and more serious for those that NEED that in their Hobbit. Jackson nailed this movie.

Nice! I've got at least a couple more viewings in me. I plan on getting the TE and EE of the first film like I did with The Lord of the Rings.

I hope they come out with a Special edition version EE like they did with LOTR when we got the Argonath, 1/6 Gollum and Minas Tirith...those to this day are awesome

The pacing in this film is fine for me...I felt less rushed through the journey and allowed me to embrace and feel Middle-Earth better...I loved it...I enjoyed it best at my second showing catching little things, getting the details I missed or wanted a second look at...even hearing the Goblin King song better for example, I even focused on the music score better on my second and third viewings

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

But you care about middle earth. I really don't. I care more about the characters then the universe.

That is the main difference between people who love the film, and people who liked it...or hated it.

True that does help...The next films I see will be in 24fps no 3D...was happy without the extra special stuff...unless the next Star Wars trailer or first 9 minutes of a film I want to see is showing in IMAX,etc...otherwise reg 24fps, 48FPS is just not at least for me worth it...The film is just as beautiful in 24fps

That would be freaking cool if they did. I'd love it.

Yeah, the pacing for me was fantastic. It's a nice journey in a world outside of what really matters means a lot to me. I do think I've enjoyed it more each time. I really love the Goblin King and Goblin town.

You're right that is the main difference. That's why I said what I said several posts back. I apologize if that makes me a jerk. :peace
