Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Finally had time to go see it on Sunday.
48fps, 3D.

The first third (or first act) of the movie was excruciating for me. I was bored out of my mind and I absolutely hated the 48fps.
The whole let's-go-back-to-the-Shire-and-get-people-hooked-with-old-Bilbo-and-Frodo felt completely gratuitous to me, it was just filler IMHO. I felt there was absolutely no need to try and cash in on that to make people feel "hey, it's a prequel!". They should've let the story speak for itself. A closing scene with old Bilbo and maybe Frodo in the third movie would've been fine, but this felt completely misplaced here.
48fps didn't look good to me. I felt like I was watching one of those old BBC made for TV movies of the 80's. The technology lacks all the charm and warmth of Cinema. Sure, the image is crisp and all details are visible, but it just lacks emotion, for want of a better word. I really hope this isn't the new fad and Disney doesn't shoot SW like this.
After the first act things do pick up considerably, and I enjoyed the rest of the movie a lot more. I'm looking froward to the rest and will make sure to watch them in 24fps...
One thing that worries me is that I really didn't connect with either Bilbo or Thorin. Neither of the two really made me care, I can only hope The Desolation of Smaug fleshes out the characters.

Maybe I'll watch this again next weekend in 24fps, see if the different frame rate helps.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

I really think you benefit from reading the book with this movie (even with the added material) If i had never read the book i might be like WTH in a lots of parts as well.

I might not understand why some trolls talk and some don't.(and then compare it to LOTR) I might not get the set up of Bilbo being a prissy, and getting shoved out in the world basically be GTG. ETC. ETC. This IMO is really a fan movie. It works for the casual fan to an extent, but if you don't have much interest in ME to begin with you won't start now. I CAN'T WAIT to see how Bilbo is changed by the end of the 3rd film.

Anyways, barrel riding, spiders, mirkwood wood elves should be insane in the next one. (oh, and that dragon thing)

Not sure if anyone noticed but I think the Elf that greets the Dwarves in Rivendell then tells the council the Dwarves have left is the same Elf that asked Arwen where she's going and calls her "my Lady" in the Return of the Ring. :dunno

Oh my. Tolkien is rolling over in the grave. :horror

And yes it's the same actor; Bret McKenzie from Flight of the Concords.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

I'll finally be catching this for a second time this Saturday. I'll be watching it in 48fps, looking forward to judging the director's preferred viewing experience for myself.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

They only give you ONE Hobbit card per Hobbit meal, so with Mom's meal, I only got two cards. They're wrapped too so I can't tell what they are unless I open them. Still debating on what to do. I tried getting more but the girl wouldn't budge. Boo! :lol
