That I expect to see in part two in order to see if the tombs are still closed as well as him going to Dol Guldur.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

So I saw this movie a couple of days ago. I went in with pretty low expectations, only because the reviews were mixed, the movie was long (and supposedly slow paced), and it had been a loooong time since Jackson dealt with this universe. However, I was really impressed with this one. I enjoyed the heck out of it, and didn't feel the pace was very slow at all really. Jackson kept things interesting to me with moments of humor, drama, and action to keep things moving along. The apparent stakes aren't as high as they were with LOTR of course, and it seems a bit less epic because of that. But I think he hit a lot of notes the right way. In terms of Jackson's work, this felt like a direct continuation of LOTR, which was good (really necessary to not disappoint fans of LOTR). The casting/acting was very good, and even the stuff that would have felt lame in the hands of a lesser director (humorous stuff with the dwarves for example) didn't feel very lame here. I will probably pick up the Blu Ray as a complement to the LOTR stuff, and will try to see the sequels in the theater.

Good show!

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Finally was able to see it a second time, this time in 48fps 3D. I thought the HFR had pros and cons. On the plus side many scenes really did look incredibly spectacular, the stone giant battle in particular, and the CGI looked almost perfectly photoreal in many scenes. Gollum and Azog were off the charts in 48fps. The detail was amazing too, individual threads in the clothing were noticeable as if I was there on location standing next to the actors. In fact a lot of if felt just that, that I was watching the actors perform live, but not watching a *movie* of them performing. I think I like the artistry of 24fps better, and yes some scenes did have that "Best Buy crappy video settings floor model" look to them. Not many, but they were there.

I recommend everyone check it out in HFR just to be able to judge for themselves.

The movie itself is just wonderful. I think the most perfect moment of the movie and one of the best of *all* LOTR films is Bilbo sparing Gollum. The cinematography of the close-ups, Gollum and Martin Freeman's expressions, the music. What a pivotal, pivotal moment to knock out of the park. It was very touching and emotional.

Azog the Defiler is a fantastically cinematic bad guy. Too bad HT doesn't have this license. After seeing their Chitauri WIP's I'd love to see what they could do with Azog.

Finally ordered the Art of Book. Unfortunately missed out on the signed copy but I did manage to snag one with the map and contrac attached.

Agreed. I really mean it when I say it'd everybit as good as The Lord of the Rings films. This film captures the book so well with the characters, pacing, and overall feel. Which to me is what Jackson did with The Lord of the Rings. That scene is very good and is set up beautifully by Gandalf telling him about what courage is. Then of course it goes also with Frodo and Gandalf in Moria.

Azog is great! I can't wait for Weta to make a statue of him. :rock

Well so do i, but if you HAD to pick one.

(think i would have to go with the first one)

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

I prefer the full movie version. It's a damn good little piece either way.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Hope there's more that are that good in the sequels.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

I would expect there to be. All of The Lord of the Rings OST have at least one super theme per album.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

I enjoyed the utterly over the top action of Goblin Town even more the second time around. I love that it isn't just Moria 2.0 and has its own distinct flavor.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread *SPOILERS*

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I thought the tie in at the beginning with Bilbo and Frodo was completely gratuitous and I loved it. I didn't mind the slower pace since it gave me time to savor middle Earth. I absolutely loved the dwarf sequences before Smaug and felt the race was given a similar level of respect as the elves. The more innocent and fun tone was enjoyable and I felt necessary to set the mood for how dark things will get. Radagast was a little too ridiculous for my tastes but not a deal breaker. I would have preferred he didn't have bird droppings in his hair. I was happy to see a glimpse of how powerful he was an Istari though against the wraith. The goblin city was a bit overdone and had the same unbelievability as King Kong. My one complaint about Jacksons films is the inconsistencies in power levels. Legolas seemed like a superhero, Gandalf was played down and the dwarves in the Hobbit just seemed to have a guardian angel over their shoulder. The "that'll do it" line was funny but I would have preferred it uttered by a lackey and have the goblin king more menacing. I did like the suggestion that orcs and goblins were different races.
I think Bilbo was captured perfectly, Gandalf was shown to be manipulating the events which is consistent with his role in the books, and the Gollum scenes were absolutely perfect. but most importantly my son described it to his mother as : "Beyond Epic!"
Can't wait for the DVD and the next film.

I thought the Goblin King crashing up through the bottom of the wooden bridge was particularly Kong-ish (in a good way.)
