Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

d'oh! :slap meant: www.theonering.net
I'm hoping it's an April Fools thingee.

Not sure why this would be an April Fool's Joke.

Some people around here have odd ideas of what amounts to funny.

What's wrong with Stuart as Bard? The CD's thought he could've made a good Aragorn (but for being too young ten years ago), so why not Bard?

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

My guess is both are an April Fools joke. Ronan I don't mind but I don't think Townsend can't act his way out of a paper bag.

If this is an April Fool's joke (and I think it is), I would be pissed if I was Stuart!:rotfl

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I don't get it, what's wrong with Stuart Townsend? He wins the role of Aragorn, then gets canned the day principal filming begins because apparently no one in charge of production could figure out until THAT day....he looked too young to play the role of Aragorn. :cuckoo: The guys entire career is now a gigantic "what if" because of that decision and to make matters worse he's now the butt of April Fool's jokes....hilarious.

Now I don't know if he could have pulled off the role of Bard or not, but I do remember that virtually no one ever thought Elijah Wood would ever be able to pull off the role of Frodo....how'd that one work out?

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I've seen other things the guy has been in and he's really not that great. Better than me of course but when you compare him to other actors he's not that good and they got lucky the realized it when they did.

The thing is, he wasn't canned because of his acting ability, he was canned because of his age, so obviously PJ thought he was up for the challenge. I remember well the uproar when Elijah Wood and Sean Astin were cast in their roles as Frodo and Sam and looking back now it appears that the 99.9% who thought they were horrible choices...were wrong. The simple truth is, even the most mediocre of actors can provide outstanding performances when cast in the 'right' role and when working under the 'right' director....and Elijah Wood and Sean Astin are prefect examples of that IMO.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Oh of course actors who aren't very good can be mad to look good. I just don't think thats the case with Townsend and after seeing him with the others I think PJ/Crew knew it. Thankfully in time. I do believe there is more to the story of why he left than too young and personal reasons.

I actually think Wood is a pretty decent actor but I'll give ya Astin.

You might be right, though I suspect we'll never know. Doesn't it however, seem a bit strange to you that he made it though the entire selection process including numerous screen tests, was given the role over countless others, and then canned just before shooting was to begin. My question to you would be, how on earth could no one have figured this out before selecting him in the first place? I mean, we're not talking about some trivial role in some 'B' movie, we're talking about the lead role in the most expensive movie ever made......The idea that after such an extensive search and selection process over a timespan of well over a year....the fact PJ and company only realized he couldn't act was just before shooting began makes absolutely no sense to me. :cuckoo:
And I know I may be flogged for say this, but quite frankly I wasn't all that impressed with Viggo Mortensen's performance. I think he was average at best and I can think of alot of actor's who IMO would have done a better job in the lead role.....and we'll never know for sure, but personally speaking I don't think Stuart Townsend would have been any worse......:dunno

It does but then again the whole picking of casts seems strange to me. :lol As far as the selection process it could just be he tested well but once things got going they realized it was the wrong choice. It happens. itI mean Harrison Ford wasn't even originally gonna be Han Solo he just tested other folks and ended up with the role. These things make no sense to me as I said. :lol

Well, I don't think you could personally be more wrong. Viggo was brilliant in this role and truly what's in the book to life. There are actors who could have played the role but none of them better from my pov. I mean Viggo is an actors actor and hell he's even been nominated for at least one Oscar. Townsend sucks and can't act. He's the guy you stick on screen to look pretty thats it and the biggest award he's been nominated for is lucky dog who's is with a hot chick.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I think Viggo was perfect as Aragorn,he done an amazing job imo,so at the end of the day i trust PJ and co to get this right, some of the British TV talent they have hired were not perhaps given's but seeing them often in various roles in British programmes makes me happy they were picked, cant wait :)
