Had to DVR the first episode, watched it last night. Holy ____.

:lol Same here. Finally had some downtime and watched it last night. Even the missus watched it and that stuff usually isn't her cup of tea.

I really enjoyed episode number one-- some good casting (and that's what I really liked about Band of Brothers) and of course the realism of the fight scenes was great.

the only bad thing about this series is .... i have to get up the next day at 4am for work ... Damn HBO for putting the good stuff on sunday nites !!!

Just a heads up for those with directv without HBO. It seems as though directv's 101 channel is reairing The Pacific a week delayed. So tonight they were showing the 1st episode. You'd have to wait a week to watch the current episode, but I guess it's better than paying monthly for HBO just for one series.

In case anyone wanted some history on one of the Corps most celebrated Marines.

I don't have HBO so I won't be able to see this series until it comes out on DVD. But that's okay, I have the book and I learned all about Gunnery Sergeant Basilone in boot camp.

Semper Fi.

this does look good,my dad has hbo but will not watch it,ill wait for the dvd release, hopefully this fall or near christmas it will be released

You guys can watch the first episode on Fancast (if it's available to you). Here's the link. I'm not sure if they'll be showing the entire series or not.

Can't wait for episode 2 tonight.

don't have HBO...was really tempted to add it just for this, but cooler heads prevailed. Am gonna wait for DVD release and am trying really hard to keep myself spoiler free. (yeah, I know Japan lost)

Amazing second episode. John Basilone is truly deserving of the label 'War Hero'. The scene where he held off wave after wave of Japanese soldiers almost single handed was incredible. I can't ye say if I like this series more than Band of Brothers, but it's right up there with it so far. Hanks, Spielberg and HBO have another home run on there hands.

Yep another great episode, John Basilone was truly a great soldier.

It just truly amazes me how the Japanese soldiers charged right into our lines in this war, over and over again. It really struck me in this episode more than the first one, especially when Basilone brought the machine gun over he was carrying and killed so many of them. Really powerful and emotional stuff and I think I may end up liking this series more than Band of Brothers once it's over.

That was the part that struck me as well... it was like old school charges, yet rather than part of the line being able to get through; no one did.

Seems like an entirely different kind of war than what occurred in Europe.

Fascinating series, and I appreciate the beginning narrative that helps give the episode context :rock

Pretty intense 2nd episode. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend Ken Burns "The War." It really showed how horrific it was at Guadalcanal. It's amazing what these guys when through.

I just finished watching it and I have to agree.....it was hella intense.

The War....is that a documentary?

John Basilone is truly deserving of the label 'War Hero'.

I wiki'ed him and.....
...his death looks like it came out of a freaking movie!! He truely is a great war hero indeed!

After his request to return to the fleet was approved he was assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 27th Marine Regiment, 5th Marine Division during the invasion of Iwo Jima. On February 19, 1945 he was serving as a machine-gun section leader in action against Japanese forces on Red Beach II. During the battle, the Japanese concentrated their fire at the incoming American troops from heavily fortified blockhouses staged throughout the island. With his unit pinned down, Basilone made his way around the side of the Japanese positions until he was directly on top of the blockhouse. He then attacked with grenades and demolitions, single handedly destroying the entire hostile strong point and its defending garrison. He then fought his way over toward Airfield Number 1 and later aided a friendly tank which was trapped in an enemy mine field under intense mortar and artillery barrages. He guided the heavy vehicle over the hazardous terrain to safety, despite heavy weapons fire from the Japanese forces. As he moved along the edge of the airfield, an exploding mortar shell instantly killed him. For his actions during the battle of Iwo Jima he was posthumously approved for the Marine Corps' second highest decoration for bravery, the Navy Cross.[7]
