Re: "The Predator" by Shane Black (2018)

Remove the dogs, the DNA & global warming crap, the UPGRADE idea, the Gundam/Jaeger armour gift – just have it as a Pred from 1 clan vs. another, ALL the way through the movie (instead of killing 1 off half-way through!), with our cast caught in the middle. Would have been much better.

I've started making notes about the good vs. the bad vs. the dumb, along with a whole lot of questions about things I didn't understand - the list keeps growing (although the "good" list is smallest) [emoji38]

.
That will be a long list lol. I'm not one to go off on a nerd rant really. I came out of Prometheus happy and even Covenant, at least some effort was put into them despite the whole mythos and general ideas going a bit sideways.

This one was just syfy channel bad lol.

I rolled my eyes at the global warming angle but then remembered that it was an aspect of Predator 2 so at least there's precedent.

Fun fact: Actual 1997 was actually a cooler than average year compared to the version we saw in P2, lol.

Reading all these reviews makes me afraid to see it. I knew it would be bad, but not as bad as everything Im reading. Hearing that they dookied all over the original Predator angers me.

I have plans to see it Monday but that may change. I dont want to see it because I know Ill be disappointed. But then I want to see it just to see a Predator killing people on the big screen. Tough decision. Might flip a coin on that one.

Out of curiosity are those the only types of B-movies that you like? Those that transcend the moniker to be considered all-time classics?

Not at all. Just sayin' the best movies truly are B-movies at heart. And I loved all those movies before they became "all-time classics"... and ultimately terrible franchises. :lol

Every 1/6th figure on people's shelves is likely from a B-movie. I can't think of one A-movie that has 1/6th figures from it. Godfather is all that comes to mind.

But if you're asking what is the lowest my taste goes for B-movies... remember, I liked Prophecy. :)

Tonto says hi.

before the fugitive's spaceship crashed, you see multiple pods eject. we only see 1 of his buddies.

you guys are ok with the 1987 pred leaving that stark tech **** in the ending? :pow

Oh okay. I couldn't think of any non-celebrated films that I've seen you praise so wondered if by and large you "needed" a film to be really well written or directed in order to enjoy it. It wasn't a loaded question or anything I was just genuinely curious. There are so many classics at this point that there's nothing wrong with just sticking to the cream of the crop and eschewing the rest.

"The Predator" isn't going to top anyone's "best of" lists obviously and it jumps enough sharks that I'm not surprised that some people are saying it's terrible but it had enough fun and creativity to keep me interested until the end. Some sequences were even cool enough to linger hours after leaving the theater.

Would you say this was a well-written film, Khev?

The writing and directing shine in the first half. The second half gives the impression that both the writer and director (Black) was losing more battles than he was winning, though I don't know that that's a bad thing considering how idiotic some of his apparent ideas were and the decision to go full CGI with the main alien villain.

I could be wrong but I think the fact that scenes were reshot due to attempts to make them less stupid instead of reshooting to sanitize the subject matter are going to make this film a little more accepted by fans of the franchise. Because it doesn't skimp on blood and mayhem. In fact it's pretty ironic that the "good" Predator in this film slaughters more humans than all the previous "bad" Predators combined, lol.

There's no getting around the fact that this film is pure schlock, the question is just how much you like that sort of thing.

I'm confused - doesn't it HAVE to be good on both counts? After all, it's RT score is currently 7% higher than the cinematic classic BvS DoJ. :wink1:

Ouch... that's a tough one. I'm not a Robocop fan. But its schlocky B-movie too.

Truthfully, most of the greats are B-movies: Star Wars, Jaws, Raiders, Die Hard, etc... but some come with extra amounts of cheese or schlock. Robocop had both cheese and schlock.

I find both Robocop 1 and Starship Troopers to have great satire mixed into the B greatness.

Don’t even because like Predator 1 Robocop 1 is a genuine masterpiece.

Robocop and Predator are my favorite movies of 1987. Love them both and have their posters on my wall. Starship Troopers is a fun movie and I like it too. JYE and I do agree on some of the classics.

Just got back. I enjoyed it, I really did. The dogs were stupid. The cast was great. I enjoyed the crew MUCH more than expected. They were a great group with good chemistry. The movie lost steam and got a little goofy towards the end. The final fight scene left a lot to be desired. The Big Predator was pretty cool. The ending was stupid. I look forward to seeing it again. MUCH better than Predators(that one is BY FAR the ****tiest film so far), I have this film above AVR-R and (I think) ahead of AVP. There was a lot of cool, good things about this movie. Only a handful of things I didn't like about it. I wanted to see more Predator, but that normal in a monster movie. The scene where the First Predator was running was horrendous.

Cool movie. I'll absolutely pick up a big NECA figure of the Big Predator, I just hope they make him larger than genother 19-20"
Preds.

man it sounds as if i'd have to go buzzed to enjoy this and that means paying top $$ ticket. From the reviews it's not even worth a matinee imho. I'll probably see it but I will have to make it a late matinee as I'll need the alcohol to enjoy it!

Sounds like Shane didn't really know what to do, and his original vision was so stupid, when the studio stepped in and demanded the reshoots, they went for full on stupid/comedy vs really trying to fix it.

Well, we'll always have this to sustain us....

Just got back...

SO let me start off by saying that while I am a fan of the original movie (19 out of 10) I am not a Predator superfan. I thought the second film was good enough and Predators was meh. THe Two AvP films were both equally bad with AvP:R having a very cool Predator chraracter to make it a more enjoyable film then the first.

I preped myself for this film to be kinda goofy film and I knew what I was going into being that it was a Shane Black movie and some were comparing it to IM:3 in tone.

So i was ready to turn my brain off and enjoy this film for what it was about to be...

Having said all that..

**** this ****ing piece of **** abomination of a ****ing **** sandwich film.

After reading the reviews i was dreading seeing the interaction between the knuckleheads. To my surprise, I thought they were a benefit to the film. I was expecting Quentin Tarantino death by dialog wasn't the case.

It was pretty good. Not perfect. But definately not a failure.

It had a good enough beginning.. I was into it when the 1st Predator escaped.. It all fell apart when the really awful ****** CGI showed up and the Super Duper Predator was not only a bad design but some of the worst CGI I have seen in years.. It reminded me so much of the Super Werewolf in Underworld 4 in the way it moved and its size... Underworld may have had better CGI though.

Film just got beyond dumb after a certain point.. Ending was crap as has been mentioned but it was so bad all over the place..

And I just can't forgive the film for taking one of the most iconic suit monsters and turning it into a bad CGI monster that only the makers of The Mummy 2 would be proud of..

Blah.

What didn't u like about it?

I just had a reply to Khev that summed it up.

I could look past some of the bad plot points and screwing with the lore... I just would not consider the film Canon... But the awful CGI and humor just got worse and worse as the film went on. The New Predator CG really just took me out of the film. And the Frog Predator just had me rolling my eyes.

Kid was OK at first but just like the rest of the film the longer it went on the more annoying it got.

I was really ready to defend this fil after the 1st Predators initial escape... But it just took such a hard nose dive around the time the Dogs and the New Predator showed up.

It wasn't just bad CGI either. It was the characters that became more annoying, the plot become more dumb, and the action became less original and less exciting.

AVP:R was a freaking Oscar Winner compared to this one.. At least that film had the good sense to treat the Predator itself with respect.

While watching the film after the first half hour I kept finding myself thinking of whishing I was watching about anything else.
