He's one of those actors who just had an immense, larger than life screen presence. Regardless of how long he was in the movie, or how big his role was, it was always, "James Gandolfini's in this? Awesome!" I think the last things I saw him in were Zero Dark Thirty and Killing Them Softly. He'll most certainly be missed.
