I hate that the progressive melodrama over imaginary oppression has given real bigots the impression that they occupy the moral high ground. It's also given them cover to openly express themselves under the aegis of fighting socialism.

Not sure how the world got so backwards and senseless. Dirt is not the high ground. Dirt is just dirt.

That perfectly illustrates my point. The concept has been abused into meaninglessness, and no one knows what a bigot is now.

A bigot is person who classifies other people according to the threats they represent to the bigot’s self-image (as opposed to a rational standard of character judgement). Their rationalizations hinge upon being able to associate evil behavior with non-essential character traits (race, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, etc.) and grouping people accordingly, and then defining their own value by contrast. So...”all black people are thieves...all women are whores...all gays are pedophiles...all Jews are shysters...but I’m white, male, Christian so I am good.” It belies an inability to see themselves as independent from whatever demographics they can be categorized, as well as a belief that moral character has something to do with traits that are not relevant to moral judgement. (It has usually not occurred to such a person that without the groups they’ve judged evil, they would be valueless, so they actually depend upon that which they hold in contempt to feel special.)

If some kid (you choose the race of the kid) got the hell beaten out of him and all his money stolen from him by an Indian kid at his school, and the rest of his life, he avoids Indian people cause he's afraid of them....is he a bigot?

If people don't "like" people of other races or religions or nationalities...but they keep it to themselves, they don't go out beating people up, they don't have protests in the streets.....what's so "evil" about being a bigot?

Archie Bunker was a bigot, no? All he ever did was sit in his lazy boy and complain. He never hurt anybody. I don't see why people having opinions is so dangerous.

I wasn't alive in the 60s, but I can say I've never witnessed such an obsession on people's identity politics as I have in the last 5 years or so. And I've also never seen such a widespread movement to try to control what people are "allowed" to say, feel, and even think. It's weird.

I find it terribly tedious when people try to convert me to their religion or ideologies. I certainly don't try to foist my beliefs on other people.

I think in the past that was just called being civil. Being polite. Respecting other people. Not making a big deal out of things.

Now everyone seems to want to destroy anyone that thinks differently than they do.


I'm an immigrant. I follow the laws of the country that havs been gracious enough to let me in. The last thing I'd ever do is run around and try to change the way people think and act just cause it's not the same as mine. You know what? Japanese people don't like Chinese people. They really just do NOT like each other. Imagine me going up to random Japanese people and commanding them to like Chinese people, cause I said so.

The internet has turned everyone in to Marge Simpson. DON'T DO THAT!! DON'T DO THAT!!!!

Sadly, before they ruined the concept of bigotry, they ruined the concept of logic.

Groups don’t exist. Only individuals, and free will means that no one’s actions are determined by their group identity (chosen or imposed). Anyone can think what they like. If they tell me what they think, they’ll find out what I think. If I think they’re a bigoted moron, that’s my business. I could have kept it to myself, but so could they. Civility should be the default setting for social interaction, but that doesn’t mean you get it for nothing.

But that's all subjective isn't it? What one person thinks is just being normal and friendly another person finds "offensive" and "problematic."

Maybe nobody should talk to anybody, ever, in the real world OR online. Especially online!

I love the internet. Easily one of the most impressive feats of technology imaginable. But I thank my lucky stars I got to experience a good part of my life before it was 100% ubiquitous. Can't imagine what life must be like for people in their mid 20s or later that never knew a world without it.

Not at all. Bigots are real.

I just don't let them bother me. On the grand scale of "bad people" I think murderers and rapists and child molesters are a lot worse than some dumb guy sitting in front of his TV saying "Man I don't like that person cause he's a XXXXX."

Now obviously I've been blessed enough in my life to never have been chased by a mob of people with hoods over their heads looking to hang me from a tree, so yes, there's levels of bigotry that are far worse than others.

But what I consider "petty" bigotry...the name calling and nonsense like that on twitter and social media? That wouldn't bother me cause I avoid social media.

People are *******s online. I once had a total stranger say he wanted to slowly slide a knife into my mother's eye and brain because I said something he disagreed with on a rock music forum. WTF??? I'm very glad that interaction was just text on a screen and not anything in real life. I'm glad computers can just be turned off.
