Re: THOR: The sequel

From Deadline:

EXCLUSIVE: Marvel Studios has found its Thor 2 director. I’m told that Marvel has set Alan Taylor, who was widely rumored to be on the short list to replace Patty Jenkins. Taylor is an accomplished TV director whose recent credits include Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire and Nurse Jackie, and he directed the feature Palookaville. Jenkins got the job but then fell out over differences with Marvel on the sequel.

This will put the film back on track to meet its November 15, 2013 release date. The sequel brings back Chris Hemsworth as the hammer-wielding superhero, from a script by Thor co-writer Don Payne. The Kenneth Branagh-directed original grossed $448 million worldwide and launched the star of Hemsworth, who reprised Thor in The Avengers and then played the latter title role opposite Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron in Snow White and the Huntsman for Universal. Taylor is repped by UTA.

That's all I really needed to know; I'm sold.

Re: THOR: The sequel

Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale, Clash of the Titans) is in talks to play a villain in Thor 2. I hope that works out--he'd be a nice addition to the cast.

I'm guessing he might be playing the Executioner, which means they would also be looking for an actress to play the Enchantress.

Re: THOR: The sequel

Enchantress and the Executioner would be great villans for the next Thor movie.

Re: THOR: The sequel

Mads Mikkelsen would be awesome in Thor 2, I really enjoyed his work in Casino Royale.

I hope Enchantress is in this and I would love to see Alice Eve in the role

Article updates:

After The Avengers, the Marvel Movie Universe is a whole new world and, if you listened to our podcast, you know its bounds are limitless. Iron Man 3 is now filming, Captain America 2 is in the works and Thor 2 will start shooting before the year is out aimed at a November 15, 2013 release date. There are two other films in the works as well.

On the Asgardian front, all we’ve really heard about the movie is that director Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones) would create a whole new Asgard. That along with some casting - Natalie Portman‘s Jane Foster will return along with Thor’s brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and other supporting characters - hasn’t really given us a good idea of the plot. A recent report added some more pieces to the puzzle, though, with Mads Mikkelsen likely to play a new villain.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has now confirmed that Thor 2 will have a “major new villain” but it will not be Thanos, whose finger prints were all over the events of The Avengers. Read his quotes and more after the jump.

Feige spoke to Empire Magazine (via Comic Book Movie) about Thor 2 and said the following:

We’re going to see the other side of Asgard. It’s not all polished and golden in this film. And the events of Avengers will have affected Thor for sure. His relationship with Loki will continue to evolve, and the biggest part is Natalie and Thor returning with Jane Foster.

When asked if Thanos would be the villain (a logical leap considering his cosmic playground and connection to Loki) Feige said the following:

No, future, future. But there will be a major new villain. A major, major new antagonist…

When I spoke to Feige he seemed pretty adamant that Thanos would likely start to figure in around the Guardians of the Galaxy release. So who could challenge Thor in Thor 2?

Besides Loki, one thing Thor lacks are “major villains” in his own universe. He has plenty of adversaries but most of the ones you’ve heard of are from different comics. If you’re talking Thor specific the Enchantress is probably second on the list but, assuming it’s Mikkelsen, that’s terrible casting. Maybe then it’s the fire demon Surtur or rock troll Ulik. They’re definitely top Thor villans, but just feel secondary compared to Spider-Man or the Fantastic Four’s adversaries.

Also, it’s a bit of a bummer that Thanos won’t play a role in Thor 2. Feige could obviously be lying out of his ass – always a possibility – but at least we’ll have that to look forward to in the future.

Who will be Thor 2′s major villain?

Re: THOR: The sequel

Yeah, I think not using Thanos could be a major mistake. If that's the case then I don't know if he would even be a major plot point in The Avengers 2.

They could simply weave him through each of the film sequels, similarly to the way "The Avengers Initiative" was woven through all of the Marvel films. Nothing blatant simple nods and with it all reaching it's place in the Avengers sequel.

That's true. I guess I'm just being greedy and want to see him on screen now :rock

Re: THOR: The sequel

I'd like to see them introduce Enchantress and Executioner. Then work towards a super villain team-up in Avengers 2 with those two, Loki, Hugo Weaving as Red Skull, Ben Kingsley as Mandarin, and then have everything build up to a massive finale with Thanos in Avengers 3 to tie up all of the existing actors' contracts and finish this generation of the Marvel movie universe.

Josh Dallas will not be returning to reprise his role as Fandral

“I’ll be missing out on wearing all that hair! The timing wasn’t right. I’m bummed about it because I had such a great experience and great time making the first film and was really excited about coming back. Marvel and Disney tried to make it work. But because of my commitment to Once Upon a Time, I was not going to be able to do both. So I’ll have to hand the reins over to someone else. I love Marvel. I wish them all the best. I will certainly be first in line to see it. On the other hand, I’m going back to the best job on TV. I love it and can’t wait to delve in more.”

Plus, Chris Hemsworth on Enchantress rumors and Charlize Theron in the role.

"I don't know much at all but it sounds interesting," Chris Hemsworth told MTV Splash Page when asked for his thoughts on the recent Enchantress rumours. "I'm not playing the usual, sidestepping that we normally have to do, I haven't read a script. They have a bunch of different ideas, but that sounds interesting." After being told that his Snow White and the Huntsman co-star Charlize Theron is a fan favourite for the role, he said: "Oh right. Well she certainly plays a pretty intimidating villain, I think she'd be awesome but I think she's tied up in 20 other films. I think she's going on to 'Mad Max' next. [But] you never know. Fingers crossed!"

Re: THOR: The sequel

Yeah, but thankfully he is pretty minor and not someone important like Idris Elba's character.

Yes! That would be awesome! Fingers crossed indeed!

Marvel Studios is targeting Zachary Levi to join the cast of Thor 2. He would replace Josh Dallas in the film.

Dallas played Fandral, one of the Warriors Three in Thor, but is bowing out of the sequel to the 2011 hit movie due to his commitments to the ABC show Once Upon a Time.

Levi’s involvement may blessed by the gods, however. He was in talks to originally play the role in 2010 but had to bow out when his cult NBC show Chuck got a last-minute reprieve from cancellation and an episode extension.

Levi’s talks are in at an early stage -- negotiations have not yet begun, according to sources -- but an offer is imminent.
