Do you honestly believe that this package was in perfect condition when it was loaded on the truck for delivery? This looks to me like it started with poor packaging. It should have been packed with fill to help keep it's shape and it should have been taped better. I would put money that this damage was done prior to the delivery driver ever having laid eyes on it.

My Fedex driver goes out of his way to get my figures to me without a wait. He goes above and beyond by meeting me on the road on my way home from work when he has to have a signature. Others have actually signed for the package for me and locked them in my other car. For their efforts beyond what they are required to do...they get some appreciation.

I do believe it should be on a case-by-case basis, though. If my driver was a jerk...he would get squat.
no. it happened after it was sent. trust me. it was taped up normally but it obviously looks like somebody tried to wrap tape around it to hold it together after the damage occurred. even the shipping label was partially destroyed so it had to have happened after it was sent. it was well packed. nothing inside was damaged.
it's a complete and utter fail on UPS's part, and it should never have been left at my door in this condition. he just rang my bell and ran cuz he didn't wanna deal with me. by the time i got to the door he was driving off and i was like "WTF???".

I work for a major transport company and for the first 3 hours every morning we sort 1500+ parcels and load up the trucks for that days delivery. Most damage is generally done before we get them but i will tell you marking a parcel as fragile is just asking for it to be miss treated. I take care with all the parcels i handle but some of the other people i work with just don't give a rats ass and will drop or throw them with thinking twice. Some drivers will not take them if they know the customer will refuse it. So just remember it is not always the drivers fault for the damage:wink1:

Why would I tip my driver? He makes probably twice as much at his job then I do?

I can understand giving the mailman something if you're friendly with him. He delivers every day. I don't give money though. Now paperboys I will leave money for because those guys don't make squat!

Other than that, I only tip waitresses or others who don't make much and rely on tips.

I have a community box where my mail goes. Am I supposed to tip him too? I've never even seen the guy.

:lecture UPS/Fedex drivers make really good money. Being unemployed right now makes it hard for me to give extra tips and such, but the regular UPS guy is so friendly that we've talked for 15-20 minutes a couple of times. He also has a German Shepherd and he was talking about my "vicious" attack dog one day and how he always hears her barking at him even when he's going across the street. :rotfl I always joke that she just doesn't like his brown socks, and that if she ever got out of the door she'd lick him to death. This being said I gave him a $25 gift card to Outback last week.

I don't receive tips for doing my job, so I don't tip mail carriers or UPS/Fedex drivers for doing their job. Both get paid well enough and probably more than I do.

I've been in a lot of debates about tipping on different message boards. I know people who tip the guys who come work on their furance or plumbers. I'm sorry but no way am I tipping all these people.

I give my mailman, and the FedEx or UPS guy who happens to come in close to Christmas, homemade candy. I have no idea what those other guys make, but my mailman makes at least 3 times more than I do a year.

I have always despised the "tip" system, and don't believe in tips. Why should someone be tipped for doing their job? I need to tip a waiter so I get good service? Shouldn't he/she be doing their best to begin with? Same for delivery people, mailmen/women, taxi drivers, etc. Why did we even develop a tip system in the first place? Just do your best... always... and if you don't get paid enough, try to find a better job. Tipping is one of the most illogical things I can think of!

Having said that... I do tip... but only because the system is in place and I know that some of these people depend on tips to make a living.

This. A thousand times, this. I'm always so confused about who to tip and how much to tip. I know waitstaff doesn't make any money, and I know 15%-20% is what's expected...

But what about a cab driver? Haircut? Pizza delivery? (do I go by speed, distance, or cost?) The creepy guy in the bathroom? I even had a mechanic say, after handing me an exorbitant bill, "Some people like to include a tip..." WTF? How do I calculate that? There's no way I'm paying 20% of $1500.

A few years back, I was in Vegas for business, and I covered the Taxi for all of us. The driver said the amount before we left the cab and I paid him. He helped the gals with their luggage, and as I was shuffling through my wallet for a tip, the guy screamed "____ YOU!!!" right up in my face before storming into his cab and driving off as fast as the cab was capable with his middle finger out the window honking the horn. Ever since then, I've been terrified of tipping.

It's too much of a hassle. I wish people would just charge what I owe and take the guesswork out of it.

Most cell phones have tip calculators I've found, so I try to use that if I remember. If not, when it comes to tipping waiters/waitresses I double the tax and that's what I'll tip (if the service was really good, I'll add in a few extra bucks).

I think the cab driver flew off the handle with you and shouldn't have been so quick to get so steamed. But, I'm just curious...why didn't you include the tip upfront when you paid the fare?

Cab rides I usually base it on distance. $5 to $8 for extra long distance/time, less money for less distance/time.

Hairdresser is always $5 tip.

Tattoo artist is all dependent on what they are charging me for their hourly rate.

I honestly believe that if you are offended by tipping somebody and it makes you mad to do so...then by all means...do no tip. We don't need someone going postal over the idea.

Tipping is a kindness... not a duty. If you do not want to practice the kindness...don't. If you enjoy doing it...do it.

I guess that pretty much wraps up this thread.:)

No, I wouldn't. I only give my mailman homemade candy because I've known him for a long time, even before he was a postman. And he goes out of his way a lot of times when he doesn't need to. Here they mailmen make darn good money. Not sure about the bigger cities.

For about a year we had a real prick who delivered the mail. Any time there was a package that he had to bring to the door, he _____ed. I wouldn't give him ____.

:D

I agree. I don't understand all this tipping stuff either. I just tip when I think there's a need.

Speaking of Vegas. I don't like when I hail a cab and the door man opens the cab door for me and expects a tip. Or when I would walk out the hotel door, he'd stick his hand up for a cab and one would come and I'm supposed to tip. Geez!

:exactly: Sometimes people want a tip for the most ridiculous things.

I paid the fair with credit and wanted to tip with cash. I guess I should've given the cash with the card. :slap It was, literally, my first cab ride ever too! :lol From then on, if a subway or bus was available, that's what I took.

Ahhhhh gotcha. That makes sense. I'm always weary of paying with a card for cab rides and such, so I forget that you can pay that way, ha! That cabby was an idiot though.

Doesn't matter that cabbie was acting like an unprofessional piece of garbage and shouldn't of did that to you. He should be very careful because he might run into a psycho who will bash his head in and stick a mop in his mouth like the Toxic Avenger.

what kind of tip should i leave for this?

I agree with the other post that said this was poorly packed to start with but maybe you should tip your delivery guy in future not to get more like this:)

To tip or not to tip.
I am mostly with mr pink here and say no to tipping, but if someone does a good job and you want to give them a tip fair enough, but how much do you give not to be tight and not to be over the top?
I don't like the awkward feeling that is imposed on you to tip at a restaurant even when you get bad service also, whats with that?

I have 2 main postmen that deliver.
One is a rude fool that wakes me early and if I don't rush to the door within 30 seconds of him ringing it, he leaves a card which is a real pain as its a long journey to pick up.
He aint getting a tip.

The other guy will stop have a chat and even leave my mail if its too big for the letterbox in my garden in a safe place.
Now he might get a tip, but what do you give?
