today's slang

When I was in High school I had a after school job as a shoe repair man. There was a shoe repair guy that was 96! working there. He had the funniest sayings(slang)..


He would say:

"the bee's knees"-I guess it meant cool

and

"what a card"

(Well, not "rad" and "wicked" as they are truly ancient. "Bogus" too. I can't seem to outgrow "dude". It's a SoCal thang.)

It's true! Even in my most determined efforts to maintain a sense of literary elegance and style, 'dude' will come out of nowhere. When I'm writing I can curb it, but when I'm speaking, it's tough. It's a tough thing to break.
