I'm 33 and yes, you often do meet many people who don't understand these sort of hobbies but, I've made my peace with it long ago. As Popeye would say, "I yam what I yam!" My wife doesn't really like all my toy and comic and movie collecting but she knows that was part of the deal with making things work with me. I remember when we were dating she would call me up and be like, what ya doing and I'd be like, "watching real ghostbusters on dvd" without missing a beat. It always helps when you have friends who are into your hobby(I have a couple so it makes things easier socially) but if you don't, just remember that you're not hurting anyone and it makes you happy and it's harmless. Most of the people who don't get it, lack creativity. Here's a test to know if you're dealing with that type of person. Ask them them if they saw any movie and what they thought. If they liked it or if they didn't like it, ask them why. If they're stumped and can't tell you or say,"I don't know, I just do", they're probably a non creative type. That test always weeds out potentially good convos from the potentially bad ones for me.

I'll say this, research (routledge, 2016) on collective nostalgia has shown that these practices serve as means of coping and stress management during life stressors, etc. Furthermore, nostalgia is based on social relationships. So for me, collecting gives me that meaning-making activity that allows me to travel back in time to earlier, pleasant states in my youth. It also gives me a sense of community in being here and talking with you guys about these things that have such value to me.

There is no rule or empirical cutoff for collective. Nostalgia as a construction has been validated as positive means of coping. Better than drinking or fighting I guess.

It's just a hobby. There are trillions of people around the world who collect old stamps and coins which sounds really stupid to me... but who am I to judge? Unless you're spendin' more than 20% of income on your personal free time, no one should give a damn. Just laugh it off with your friends and relax.

I'm 45. If I gave a **** what other people thought, I probably would not have been a Barbie collector for the past +35 years.

^^ That's true :lol

I'm 40 and haven't "outgrown" collecting comics, toys, statues, etc. and don't plan on it. Collecting is a part of who I am--my true family and friends understand (even if some of them aren't interested in it). I don't concern myself with what anyone thinks about my hobby.

I think you have to be careful in how you put it across.

Saying you collect ' dolls for adults ' might not be the best way :inlove
