Re: Trevor's Firefly Sculpts

I love building stuff for my kids. My daughter has a Barbie mermaid environment, a castle and a Tinkerbell house. My son has Jabba's palace and soon a death star play set.

Your children are lucky to have a dad that is as talented as you are. I'm a fairly good artist and used to draw comic book characters for my 2 boys. They're all grown up now, but both of them have artistic talents.

Re: Trevor's Firefly Sculpts

I'm looking for a good body for Jayne. Something beefy that looks good in a tshirt. Any suggestions?

Re: Trevor's Firefly Sculpts

Okay folks....next up, Inara. She needs just a little more work before molding, but I think she's about there. Morena has a very difficult face to capture.

I hope you enjoy seeing her! Of all of the portraits, I think she'll benefit most from a great paintjob, seeing as how Inara was always dolled-up. I can't wait to see how you guys handle her!

I sculpted just a bit of neck onto the head to give her a bit more height on a TrueType. It helps balance out the slightly oversized nature of the portrait.

I plan to have her molded up this weekend, and I'd imagine I could take a few orders before the Thanksgiving holiday if the castings look good. I'll let everyone know!

Stay shiny,
Trev

*yawn*

Jk. Brilliant work as always, Trev! Love your style. Now to study and pour over the nuances for the next half hour. :p

If you ever revisit these, I'd love to see a hair down version of this beautiful portrait. And perhaps a hair up version of Kaylee as well.

Re: Trevor's Firefly Sculpts

Awesome Trev! The more you deliver, the more I get excited for what you can do next! Really Looking forward to seeing Book!

Re: Trevor's Firefly Sculpts

Gotta be honest, I don't really see this one. Something is a bit off with the mouth and shape of the face. I think the cheeks and lips are just a bit too full. But maybe thats just becuase the sculpt isnt painted yet.

However, I definatly think it was a huge mistake to include that little bit of the neck on the sculpt, as this will make the head sit way too high on a body, giving any figure a case of "giraffe neck". Im not really sure how that helps balance out the slightly oversized head. It just makes the head too large and the neck too long. If anything it draws more attention to it. Like a balloon on a string.

Hey Trev, well done. I think you're right. With Inara, the likeness will be gained from the paint job. She was always well made up, and you can't sculpt that. The make up and clothes made the character who she was. I love the hair up. With the hair down you would really restrict head movement. I think you're right about the neck height. She has a very long neck and is about the same height as Zoe, just a little taller than Kaylee. With the Caucasian HT body being a bit shorter, she does need the extra height. Overall I absolutely love her.

I'm sorry you feel she's off, ShadowX81. I appreciate your opinion, and I'm certainly not going to disregard your point of view. It does hurt to hear you're not wild about her, but every artist has to face that.

Having the head sit really low on the neck as it did before I added the hint of neck looked ridiculous to me, but...I'm always willing to admit I'm wrong. Shots like this led me to want to raise the head a bit to add to the elegant feel...

But I hate to think of all of the work I've already put into her and the work that lies ahead will just lead to disappointment. I'll progress after we hear from some others.

Entropy, stshammgod, and Old Grandpa- thanks!, I hope Inara will be every bit as much fun for you all as the others.

Re: Trevor's Firefly Sculpts

I can imagine this was a tough one. Unlike Gina Torres or Jewel Staite, Morena has one of those smooth faces that doesn't really have any outstanding features that a sculptor can latch onto and build around. I bet you if somebody photoshopped a paintjob on it with full makeup the likeness would pop. The eyes, cheeks, mouth and chin look right on to me.

Hey Trev. I think ShadowX81 is way off base on this one. He needs to see it painted to fully realise this. I agree with Obsolete. I think it's a great sculpt.

Re: Trevor's Firefly Sculpts

I think the likeness is about perfect Trev, shapes and especially expression! I cannot wait for this one!! I'm also planning on putting her in heels to add to her height a bit.

Re: Trevor's Firefly Sculpts

I think it looks great! she does have a very generic face so it is hard to capture. I also think you are right about the neck extender. she has a very long neck.

Re: Trevor's Firefly Sculpts

Thank you all! I certainly don't want to offer anything that might be seen as inferior to the others, but I do feel pretty confident that this is comparable to any of my other attempts with this series. I believe I'll go ahead and finalize this as is and mold her. I apologize to anyone who is disappointed. I appreciate you all for sticking with me in this, as it's been a labor of love for me.

Thanks again guys!

Re: Trevor's Firefly Sculpts

I think it looks awesome, but it would be cool to do a variation with her hair down. It's easier for a figure to have the hair up, but she was mostly seen with it down. Maybe once you finish the other characters. But still I think this one looks great
