I am in the pre-dental society at my university and we are the only ones in the nation that runs 3 free dental clinics. They are all student run and we work off of donations. All our dentists are volunteers that donate their time every night. One of our clinics is in a church, the other in a trailer, and the last one in a elementary school. We as students get to volunteer as dental assistants and offer free dental care to the underserved community. At the same time some have discovered whether or not dentistry is for them and many have discovered that dentistry is actually more than just money. More information can be seen here fdc-pds.ucsd.edu.
Last year I had the fortunate opportunity to travel to Ensenada, Mexico with the Thousand Smiles Foundation. A large number of children in Mexico are born with a cleft lip/palate. In Ensenada, as a pre-dental student I of course do not get to assist in surgeries but I did everything else that I could to help pre-surgery. It was great meeting so many different professional people who were willing to donate their time and effort and the beauty of it, it was all free for the children, even the surgeries. To think of being able to be a part of changing their life and for them to have grow up having normal childhood is a feeling of no other. A whole weekend with a whole lot of work but nonetheless the most rewarding weekend I ever had, https://www.thousandsmiles.org/.
Here's a photo of me in Ensenada assisting a dentist. I have tons of photos and the few I'm showing barely represents what went on that day. I am not even a dental student yet!
P.S. I don't need the $50 gift card. I just wanted to share the story with you guys!
