GSP is good on the ground, sort of; he is good at getting the takedown, but in his last few fights he hasn't done much when there - just boring fights really.

remember though, he tore his groin early in the Alves fight, but before that, he smashed BJ, But the point is, he would dominate Shields

in the cage GSP would win, i'd bet the farm on it. Too athletic, amazing he's not a "wrestler".

If they fought in a Submission Grappling match it would be very interesting.

OK Mr. Know-it-all...who's a more dominant MMA grappler?

I'm very curious to hear your answer....there are a couple of contenders ....the answer is NO ONE.

Kazushi Sakuraba. Call me when Shields defeats 4 Gracies in MMA (2 by technical submission).

Demian Maia is also a more dominant MMA grappler.

And if you wanna talk pure JJ/grapplers outside of MMA that are more dominant and more accomplished than Jake Shields well.. there's too many names to list.

The Gracie Hunter eh? He was very good in his day but NOT TODAY. These days he's old, beaten up (been through way too many wars). I'm rather confident Shields would beat him in a grappling match.

Demian Maia...2-time Abu Dhabi champ, very lethal. He would give Shields a run for his money. This would be a very interesting cage match, i still believe Shields would pull it out, he's stronger than Maia.

If you wanna get serious and one up me...I'll one up you, Roger Gracie is by FAR THE BEST grappler competing in modern MMA & Jitz competitions.

Well see I was kinda confused.. and with your comments above (Especially saying Roger Gracie) now I'm really confused.

There's a big difference between Tournament/Sport JJ/Grappling and MMA Grappling. And you initially said MMA grappling. But now you're kinda mixing the two.

For example, in pure Tournament/Sport JJ/Grappling:
Roger Gracie > Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira

BUT.. in MMA JJ/Grappling:

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira > Roger Gracie AND Jake Shields

Roger Gracie is 2 - 0 in MMA with Subs over Yuki Kondo and Ron Waterman. That's not impressive by any stretch of the imagination. While Big Nog has submitted more Top HW's than any other fighter including Fedor. So in MMA, there's no comparison. But in pure Tournament/Sport JJ/Grapplin Big Nog hasn't accomplished anywhere near what Roger Gracie has.

Like I said.. there's plenty of guys in pure Tournament/Sport JJ/Grappling who are more dominant and better than Jake Shields: Marcelo Garcia, Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, Ricardo Arona, Roger Gracie, Vinny Magalhães, Pablo Popovitch (who already defeated Shields in the 2005 ADCC Championships) etc.

AND there's plenty of MMA JJ/grapplers who are better than Shields as well.

Can't wait to see Hendo kicking ass in strikeforce. I'd love to see him fight a catchweight bout agianst Fedor.

I think it's a bad career move obviously, with the lack of talent Strikeforce has in the LHW/MW divisions (even with their partnership with DREAM) but I support Hendo's decision. No reason to stick around if you feel like your employer is screwing you over and doesn't appreciate you.

Just what Fedor needs. Another unranked, non-HW. :lol

FYI: I doubt it would have to be a catch weight bout since Lindland made the HW minimum when he fought Fedor.

I'm guessing you don't know Jake because he's not in the UFC (which is typical for the average MMA fan) Realistically he is undeniable one of THE TOP, if not THE TOP grappler in the world (easily considered one of the top 10 grapplers in the world ... but i'm talking about MMA competition) Sheild is Ceasar Gracies best student, and he is a perfect mixture of crushing wrestling and jitz at it's highest level. He has made a career on his 1-Dimensional attack of grappling.

HENDERSON, one big weapon, his right is devistating but DUDE...educate yourself please before making childish remarks about one of the Greatest MMA fighters of all-time.

Oh the typical "Nasdeo" response to anything too difficult to refute...that I 'must' think UFC = MMA :lol

Everyone here that has been in this thread long enough knows how much I loved Pride, so no, im not just all about the UFC.

But the funny thing is, you can't formulate a logical response to the fact that the UFC has the best talent out there right now. Until Shields beats a GSP, Hughes, Fitch, etc I don't buy it. Shields' fight record is like a who's who of WHO??!??! Dominating a bunch of nobodies in grappling doesn't really impress me....but it apparently does you.

Who cares if he is ceasar gracie's best student? I'd bet the farm even Penn would RNC shields at welterweight.

Marcello Garcia is outta control.

Penn vs Sheilds would be interesting. I would love to see it. I think he could take Hughes. Fitch and GSP would win, UD or TKO.

It would be interesting to see him in the UFC, but not before i see Hendo vs Shields in Strikeforce...and then Hendo vs Mousassi, and then Hendo vs FEDOR ! ! ! ! ! It's a possibility.

Shields has an impressive MMA resume... Lawler, Okami, Condit, and Daley aren't nobodies... It's not as impressive as GSP's, but it's solid.

A win over Hughes wouldn't do much for him. Especially now that the UFC seems to padding his record by picking opponents tailored for his style.

Nash said "A".. so he didn't mean Matt Hughes now but a fighter of that caliber when GSP fought him. Hughes was the top WW in the world + Champ when GSP beat him in their rematch. And he was still top 5 in their third match. Fitch and Alves were both ranked #2 (behind GSP) when they fought and lost to Georges. BJ was the former/unbeaten WW Champion coming into his first fight with GSP (gave up the belt and left the UFC because of money) and BJ was/is the #1 LW + UFC Champ in their second fight. Koscheck was top 5 in WW when GSP beat him too.

That's the difference. GSP has beaten the best his division has to offer. You can't compare the familliar names in Shields' win column to the accomplished AND ranked WW fighters that GSP has beaten.

Shields biggest career victory is a decision win against Sakurai. Unfortunately, it came AFTER A. Silva had already beaten him (First career loss for Hayato) and AFTER Matt Hughes TKO'ed him in the UFC.

Shields is a decent fighter, but realistically he needs to fight some top WW's before people act like he's something special.
