SYDNEY, Australia - Ultimate Fighting Championship executives say they'd support a move for mixed martial arts to become an Olympic sport.

UFC president Dana White, in Sydney ahead of Sunday's sold-out UFC 110 at Acer Arena, said while his company would not actively lobby the International Olympic Committee, he would support their inclusion in the games.

Although UFC matches feature caged fighting, the different disciplines of mixed martial arts - boxing, wrestling, taekwondo and judo - feature in the Olympics as individual events.

"It would be a huge benefit to us if mixed martial arts became an Olympic sport," White said. "It would create instant awareness around the world, and it would be huge.

"I would support it 100 per cent. I personally am not out there trying to get mixed martial arts as an Olympic sport … but if it popped and they said, 'Yes, we're thinking about it,' I would go guns ablazing and try to make it happen."

The UFC's first show in Australia sold out 16,500 tickets within four hours in December, despite the card not having been announced. White also told local media in stories published Friday that Australia could become an annual stop on the UFC tour.

The only venue to sell out faster, according to the UFC, was UFC 83 in Montreal in April 2008, when 21,390 attended the Bell Centre.

Sunday's event in Sydney will be headlined by a heavyweight bout between veteran Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Cain Valasquez and a middleweight clash between Wanderlei Silva and Michael Bisping.

Former UFC heavyweight Nogueira, a Brazilian who has a jiujutsu black belt, has a record of 32-5-1. Velazquez, a 27-year-old Californian, is 7-0 and has beaten all but one opponent inside the distance.

Silva, with a record of 32-10-1, won the PRIDE world championship in Japan for five years in a row. Bisping, 19-2, was the UFC's winner in its third season.

An undercard bout between Elvis Sinosic and Chris Haseman will be the first all-Australian bout to take place in the UFC.

Thats funny cause the wife and I were talking about this last night. They have Taekwondo and Judo and boxing and wrestling...why cant we "mix" them and have MMA as an olympic sport. I do think the rules would have to be a little more refined for it to pass. It would educate people and entertain at the same time.

The only thing I see a problem is that the fights would be called way too soon, and there being a LOT of messed up dudes come time for the medal rounds.

My only proposal to that is using 6 or 7oz gloves. You can still grapple with guys and still knock out guys with these types of gloves. I know from experience, but you can obviously take a little more of a beating with these gloves, which may help early stoppages. I dont know though, there are also negative aspects to using these gloves, the only benefit is the added cushioning to them.

I agree that there would prolly be a lot of early stoppage and some beat up guys in the medal rounds, but in the early ufc tournies, guys would fight multiple times a night. Thats where wrestling and JJ comes in handy, you would want to end fights as early as possible. I would love to see MMA in the olympics though. Theres so much diversity in this sport as far as countries.

The only real hurdle for including it as an olympic sport is the fact that the games are spread over just about 2 weeks; by the time you are in the medal rounds these guys would be beat to hell, esp if they were decision wins and three rounders! :horror

It would be like the "old days" of UFC.

MMA will never be an Olympic Sport. Trust me.

Funny tidbit from Sherdog: Before events they have a little article called "Pros Pick" where they ask professional fighters/trainers who they think will win the main event.

So who do they ask for Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Cain Velasquez?

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira said:
Velasquez is not a striker or submission guy, but he’s a very tactical fighter. Rodrigo is more experienced, is a more complete fighter and has a better ground game and better boxing. He will have to use much of his experience in the fight, and I think that wins it.

:lol:lol:lol

What's Big Nog's twin brother supposed to say!? "Nah he's gonna lose. I'm going with Cain". :duh

Why even ask. They also ask training partners/teammates sometimes and it's just as pointless.

I always laugh at the UFC Countdown. Obviously the training teammates are going to say their guy is going to win. I would be shocked if they didnt.

Yeah, I can't think of ANY time where a training partner/friend/etc. actually chose the other guy. That would be pretty funny though.

i agree. i think Cain will win by ground and pound with a flurry of punches with the ref stopping the fight b/c of it.

I dont think would wanna take nog down, his best bet would be to KO him in the stand up, if Mir was able to drop nog, I gotta beleive Cain can do so too...
