ESPN the Mag story tabs Lesnar as highest paid fighter at $5.3 million in 2010
By Steve Cofield

In the major sports, stories about athletes' salaries generally draw derision and jealous reactions. In the case of mixed martial arts, fans probably have a more supportive stance for the fighters. The combatants aren't making a killing relative to athletes from the NFL, NBA and MLB yet they're putting their safety on the line.
According to ESPN the Magazine, the highest paid MMA fighter in 2010 was Lesnar at ONLY $5.3 million. Boxer Manny Pacquiao led the way in the other major combat sport at $32 million.

On the surface, that makes MMA look pathetic. Should MMA stars like Lesnar, Georges St-Pierre and Anderson Silva be making $15 million-plus a year? Maybe, but the argument from MMA promoters is that the gap between boxing's haves and have-nots is massive while MMA can boast of dozens of fighters making in excess of $500,000 per year.
The StarPhoenix's Dave Deibert points out that Lesnar is actually a bigger draw than 99.9 percent of the fighters in the modern history of combat sports:
Lesnar has recently become the biggest pay-per-view draw in the world. In 2010, he joined Mike Tyson as the only athletes to twice draw more than one million buys on pay-per-view in a single year — Tyson did it three times in 1996.

Lowest-paying sport: women's bowling.
Highest-paying sports (tie): baseball and boxing.
Gender breakdown: 32 men, 11 women.
Total money earned: $238,536,500.
Average amount earned per athlete: $5,547,360.

I didn't. Dana left out the biggest reason why Brock is doing the show and that's because it potentially gives Brock a shot at the title. Really the driving force behind why a private guy like Brock is doing something like this. I :lol'd when Dana left that out.

He probably left that out on purpose to make Brock seem like a saint.

Does anyone see Brock actually beating JDS? I just can't see it happening, in fact I think it's gonna end with Brock out cold.

I agree, if Brock can get the fight down hes got a chance. I mean like I always say love him or hate him you cant deny the guys size and strength with his wrestling ability. If he gets you down and manages to control the top, your in trouble. Its one of those situations where BJJ blackbelts even with a good guard, I dont think you want a guy like that in your guard. Hes just to big to control like that, its best to get the hell out of there and back to the feet. If I had to put money on it, id for sure bet on JDS.
As Ive said in the past, you just cant help someone who doesnt like to get punched and Im sure JDS will land several strikes that will make Brock think twice about standing with JDS...leading back to Brock most likely trying to get the take down. Its either mans fight for sure, but I just think JDS has more of a chance of taking this.

It all depends on JDS' takedown defense and and how good he is off his back. Two things we don't really know since he's never faced a top wrestler and in 6 fights for the UFC he's never been put on his back by someone to the point that we've seen what his guard is like.

We all know Brock can be TKO'ed. I have my doubts about a straight KO though (he hasn't been close to being KO'ed in any fight).

Should be interesting.

Brocks legs have buckled a few times. But he hasn't been out cold, because once he gets hit he "cradles" up and goes into defense mode, and gets in more trouble, he needs to shake the punches off.
His Standup needs alot of work, JDS will pick him apart. And its no secret that Brocks only chance is the takedown. JDS will be ready.

Also hear Mayhem Miller signed with the UFC again.

I see people saying that a lot but realistically the only guys he's cradled up against in defense mode are two guys who routinely KO/TKO their competition.

Lesnar didn't do any of that against Mir in either fight, against Herring or against Couture either. I agree his stand up is atrocious but I'm not sold on the idea of Brock not being able to take a punch without breakdancing and running away. Considering the guys he fought when that happened.

Might see it again versus JDS too, since that's the third straight heavy handed opponent for Brock. :lol

Anything can happen, and I honestly don't know who'll win but I will say this: If I were betting I'd bet on JDS.

Sheilds at +300...damn... Worthless to bet unless u pick a underdog. I like to win some money back. But its a gamble. Everyone is saying Sheilds has no chance. Would love to see a upset.

I'm thinking about dropping $250 on Machida. If I understand correctly that means I would make a $100 if he wins. I like both fighters but I just don't see Couture winning. Couture has a suspect chin, a lot slower, and pretty one dimensional.

Machida needed the last round in the Rampage fight to get back to him former self (or close to it). Machida's Sumo and overall wrestling is underrated plus his BJJ is too. Pushing Machida up against the fence isn't gonna win Randy this fight. I never though Randy would beat Gonzaga but I'm still going with Machida by a pretty wide margin.

MMA Junkie is reporting that Jon Jones is injured and wont be fighting Rashad. Looks like Phil Davis is going to be fighting Rashad.
So lets see where this leads us now...

after Davis's rather boring performance, I don't know why Dana thinks he all of a sudden is worthy to fight the #1 contender in that division. Rashad has a lot to lose in the fight, but both guys kind of have the same style. Either way, I think Jones would take out either of em. I would have rather seen Shogun take the fight unless he is too injured to do so.

lol, what is with these fighters winning the title and then getting injured almost immediately after? Trying to earn some promotional dollars before a possible loss?

1. Shogun
2. Cain
3. Jones
4. ????

Well Jones had already said he wanted time off. Hope teh injury isnt too bad

No one will ever milk a title reign like Matt Serra did.

Ugh... Matt Serra

I think Jones injury is a torn ligament in his thumb which he says has been bothering him since college. Sure is strange he wants to get it fixed now.
