I was just talking about this with a friend today at work. I dont get the whole point of interum belts...as stated its just a way to market so someone goes "hes a champion"...dumb

Yeah.
The whole belt system serves as a "trophy title" only. In fact it is the wearable trophy replacing the actual trophy awarded to the winner as far back as the UFC tournaments. I guess the status of champion hasn't evolved much since the early 90s. Bottom line.... "champion" = marketing.

Actually interim belts are a good idea so that the division doesn't get stagnant at the top, but as some have already pointed out, it kind of ruins the point of having one, if hes then allowed to sit on his ass waiting for the regular titleholder. :dunno

"champion" = marketing.

Sorry but that's a gross oversimplication and completely demeans (for this example) all the hard work fighters put in for years on route to acheiving that status. CAN it be used as a marketing tool? Absolutely. But is that its real and only purpose? No.

It's all about context. Outside the context of the insurance industry (for example) the title of "Saleman of the Year" means absolutely nothing. But within the context of that industry, it means a lot. It's what drives and motivates salesmen and it's an achievment that represents the pinnacle of that profession. Same is true for all fields of work, entertainment, etc. Again, within the context of those things.

For MMA, being champion simply means the best in that division, in that org, at that particular time. And specifically for the UFC which has the most consensus ranked fighters for each division, the best in that division, in the world, at that particular time.

Does the UFC use that status for marketing? Absolutely. But to say that the only reason why that person is champ and has a title is for marketing purposes is wrong.

:goodpost::exactly:

That is kinda what I was meaning by winning the actual title.

I'm not knocking someone's Championship result out of their athletic endeavor. From a payday (Zuffa as a whole) perspective...however...this is what it boils down to.

Oh my bad, you were talking about interim titles? If so yeah, stupid idea. If a champ can't defend just strip them and then give them an immediate title shot as soon as they return.

Nick Diaz is a joke. Dude no-showed his World JJ Expo superfight with Brulio Estima. This was on PPV too, so for everyone who actually rented it they got screwed out of a main event. No wonder he's a marathon runner: He's always running away.

what the ____? i was actually looking forward to watching that BJJ match.

:lol:lol:lol

The fighters' purse was gonna be donated to charity too.He had a chance to help a good cause,but you know...It's Diaz.

There is no independant sanctioning body for UFC/MMA titles. But with that said, a sanctioning body doesn't neccessarily mean "better". Especially in combat sports i.e. Boxing. They're all corrupt, routinely and wrongly strip champions and in general ruin Boxing by flooding each division with multiple BS belts simply because title fights sell more/draw more interest than non-title fights. So yeah, they suck. :lol
So true, boxing is more convoluted than ever

Ok, this is kinda weird that he pulled a no show, I saw an interview with Nate last week and he was saying his brother was all kinds of stoked to do this event.

Dana probably told him not to fight cause he was suspended. But I thought there was problems with his oppenent making weight. Either way I could careless. I wanna see him fight MMA.

:lol Nick never listens to Dana, why start now!?

Nick has all kinds of obvious mental health issues ie: social anxiety, Asperger's syndrome and even some sort of schizophrenia. He's self medicating with chronic marijuana abuse which only makes matters worse and worse because pot eventually changes your brain chemistry (which in Nick's case is already very unbalanced) permanently. What happened at the BJJ Expo doesn't surprise me one bit..Nick needs proper psychiatric treatment

He ran away because he was scared, homie.

As far as Dana White's reaction:

no, not shocked and I'm surprised u people are! He no showed a Las Vegas press conf to a fight he was gonna make HUGE $ and title.

people are ____in nuts and braindead to be OUTRAGED and SHOCKED that Nick no showed something.

:lol:lol:lol
