I always loved Event Horizon. Considering that every other film made by Paul W.S. Anderson is essentially a steaming turd, it's surprisingly well acted, well written (not written by Anderson), interesting, clever, engaging, creepy, and scary.

But most people seem to lump it in with Anderson's other, godawful movies. It was panned my a mjority of critics...and it's way better than most people usually ever give it credit for being. That does mean it's underrated.

Disagree. That would mean that, at least for you, it was worthy of all the hype it got.

What hype? Ads? That doesn't mean ____. Ghostbusters 2 was heavily promoted at the time, and a lot of people, including Bill Murray consider it to be sub par and even terrible. It is however, a great movie, just not as good as the first one (not many films are). And Ghostbusters 2 underrated because most people can't or won't acknowledge how good it really is.

Ads, tv spots, talkshow promotions, etc. Event Horizon was well hyped. I'm not calling it a bad movie by any means (as that's subjective really), but it definitely wasn't underrated. I would use Jaws as an example. Awesome movie. Not underrated.

Ask 100 people if they like Jaws and i guarantee most of them will say "yes," and if any of them haven't seen it, they'll have certainly heard of it. Ask another 100 people if they liked Event Horizon and most will either say "no," flat out tell you they think it was crap, or that they've never heard of it.

:lol commercial flop =/= underrated horror movie :dunno

I saw ads for Event Horizon in everything from comic books to tv spots, billboards, etc. Just because the masses didn't like it doesn't mean it's an underrated horror film. Doubly so when you consider half the genre it was marketed to was SciFi.

I don't get it, you are or you are not saying that a commercial flop makes an underrated movie. I'm not, but it can certainly be a factor. But if the masses and critics rate a movie as bad, but it's actually good, that's the very definition of underrated, i.e., "rated too low, or underestimated."

I'll give you an example. Night of the Demons (the original). That flick hardly received any press back in the day, but it was a pretty fun horror flick with some great special effects. Critics didn't really rate it because it was completely OFF the radar. Honestly, critics, more often than not, ____ on good movies. They hated Predator as well as Terminator. Both of those films have respectively owned their place in history. Neither are underrated. So what critics say, good or bad, doesn't mean anything.

Hmmm. Very interesting. My mind set was with S. Griffin on what I consider underrated. But reading your post, especially last one nam, I now understand your point. I always thought Event Horizon was underrated myself. I do not remember it being heavily advertised where I lived, but I might be wrong and just don't remember since it was back in my high school years.

Out of curiosity, what is your take on "Sleepers" movies. They usually don't get any hype ad or promo wise at the beginning.

It depends entirely on the movie.
