Well....the fact we don't have Destroyer yet it makes it hard to judge but I could add a few things to it like a cool base with built in name plate and light up feature......He is not an Avenger but he fights one.....
But war Machine is very cool too......I already have Iron man VI maquette so it go well with it but still.....

I don't think you "need" to get another character piece to display either of these with. War Machine displays fine on his own.
I heard the same thing about the Hulkbuster before I got him. Everyone said you needed the hulk to display him with and that's a bunch of malarkey.

True about War Machine but not too sure about Hulkbuster. I mean you can certainly display Hulkbuster alone....but its made for busting Hulk. At least make him mad, tickle his toes, or something.
I think it depends on what you have in your collection and how you choose to display your pieces.
