NEW YORK/LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Time Warner's Warner Bros studio plans to announce it will release next generation DVDs on Sony Corp's Blu-ray format exclusively, two sources familiar with the plans said on Friday, dealing a big blow to Toshiba Corp'sHD DVD format.

Warner Bros, Hollywood's biggest seller of DVDs representing about 18 to 20 percent of sales in the United States, had been one of the few studios that backed both formats.

News Corp's 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney Co, and Lions Gate Entertainment Corp are among studios backing the Blu-ray format. Viacom Inc's Paramount studios and General Electric Co's NBC Universal, owned by General Electric Co and France's Vivendi, release movies in HD DVD format.

An announcement is expected shortly, the sources said.

Isn't this like the 3rd time they've flip flopped? I have both so I could care less but damn this is getting annoying already.

Posted this a while back in the Blu-ray thread when it was first announced (rumored), and I was laughed at...

I feel that way too. I buy mostly blurays just because the PS3 is not as loud. Other than that I could give a rats A$$. :D

I'm really freaking hapy to be a blu- exclusive supporter, but man, I really feel bad for people who supported HD DVD exclusively. Warner Brothers owns TOO many good movies. Dark Knight? :(

I'm impressed. Sony might actualy not bungle this like they Did betamax. Did they lift the ban on the porn industry yet? that's what killed betamax for them in the 80's.

How does Transformers look on Blu-Ray?

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwe

Yeah, well, not everybody loves that movie. To me, it was a poopy flavored lollipop. And I thought that BEFORE Paramount went exclusive.

Well, if Warner goes exclusive, and others follow, that means that we can sooner or later end up with one format that all studios put movies out on. That is, if HD DVD does die over time due to this. NO ONE likes this multi-format bullcrap that makes us buy two formats to watch all the movies we want in HD.

Oh yeah, last time I checked, Time Warner owns New Line. New Line owns The Lord of the Rings. Uh oh.
