Yeah I get that, which is why it's depressing - nothing really changes the fact that millions of people die one way or the other. But I don't like how they changed the ending in the movie to be a bit more optimistic than it really is. Dr. M leaving because he wants to help save the world is silly and devalues his character a bit, in my eyes. That's not why he leaves. He leaves because he knows it's worthless for him to even try to dabble in the ways of man - we will end up destroying ourselves one way or another. Making him the smartest man in the world ;)

Yup, didn't he say that he was tired of humans and their entanglements? It's in our nature to be destructive, he knew that humans and their violent ways were beyond even his reach. It's unfortunately part of or programming. I see it in my children and in children in general. Children fight and beat each other at a very early age. Who has taught them that? I see my 2 year old and her cousin, who is also 2, play and suddenly out of nowhere they are biting and beating each other over a toy . It's sadly who and what we are.

Incidentally, The Comedian figured that out before any other character in the book/film. :lecture

Tell me if I'm wrong but didn't Doctor Manhattan change his mind about human life?
To quote Doctor M 'Exposing this plot, we destroy any chance of peace'. Then he destroys Rorschach to prevent him from revealing Vendit's plan. Doctor Manhattan also says that he strongly doubts Rorschach will reach civilisation, I'm sure he's referring to the journal.
So IMO I think he did help save the world but then leaves it in humanites hand for the future, knowing Ozy's utopia will not last forever

why would Manhattan know about Rorscach's journal? he never saw it and it wasn't related to his past/future.

They same reason he'd know about Laurie's past, when someone comes into contact with his life he sees their past and future, the same way he saw Wally die before the interference. When he came into contact with Rorschach after the explosion and the disturbance was gone he'd be able to see it all. While the whole plot wasn't in the journal the implications are towards Veidt with the reasons and the possible indications.

Personally I love this story, its so layer and complicated....I decided to show my life this afternoon:

It'll break even or at least close to it by the time of its run but it'll do its best business in DVD sales.

Exactly.... because they're too busy watching dumb crap.

I have to agree here. In all honestly and I could care less if it sounds snooty, but Watchmen takes a certain level of thought to really enjoy and understand it. It's not one of those films that's going to spell it all out for you.

You couldn't care less. I always love when people get snooty and don't get the expression right. You're welcome.:lol:lol:lol

I just wish we had concrete numbers. Some sources have production cost at 120, some 130 and some of 150, Along with that, we also have no concrete numbers on the advertising campaign, so its impossible to judge the films earnings as of now.

If the film costs 120 mil (which some sources state) with a 40 mil advertising campaign, it already has broken even in 3 weeks. Also, there are still 8-12 weeks left in its theatrical run, and as mentioned previously, this film has the potential to do huge numbers on the dvd, blu-ray and rental market. In short, the film will break even at some point and turn a profit for its producers.

When its all said and done, Watchmen will not be remembered as a huge, money printing blockbuster, or a putrid, embarassing box office bomb. It will sit comfortably inbetween.

:lol Yeah. That expression is a tricky one, it takes a certain level of thought to really enjoy and understand it. ;)

I hope all these rumours I hear about a prequel based on the Minutemen are true...I enjoyed Watchmen a lot...

Well, I just went for the third time today...and I like this movie more with each viewing.
It's in the smallest house at our multiplex, down to 3 shows, no late night ones anymore (which seems dumb...this is definitely a late night audience movie I think). Anyway, the theater was FULL and the sad thing is, this was probably the last week for it here.
I think this is the kind of movie that given the opportunity, would have "legs" and be a fair performer for another month or so...maybe never filling the house, but word of mouth and the total lack of anything else like it in the theater could keep it going for a while.

I keep reading how peole are complaining that there is nothing interesting or really good at the movies anymore...then along comes one that is layered and packed with great story, detail, spectacle and nuance and what happens? Nobody goes...they want to flock to the latest CGI blandfest babysitter flick....oh well.

I just hate it that the BO is so much like a horse race anymore...if it doesn't grab a big wad right out of the gate, it's dismissed as a failure and discarded to make room for the next forgettable piece of crap.
I hope that this perceived "failure" at the BO does not hurt it's chances of getting a really nice treatment on DVD...bells-n-whistles, extended version, deleted scenes, making of extravaganza...and not just some quick single disc, over-compressed run-off to file and forget....

Oh well...rant off....hopefully I'll get one more chance to enjoy it with an audience again before it disappears...
