Re: Weta Orthanc Pre-Ruin Environment

No question, and the EX is sure to have no hold on quite a few collectors.

Of course, I am a sucker for an EX. :yess:

what EX? is there going to be a EX of orthanc released too? when...?

Re: Weta Orthanc Pre-Ruin Environment

anyone considered getting 2 and converting the 2nd to a ruined tower? :)

Re: Weta Orthanc Pre-Ruin Environment

Pre-ordered! I regret missing the original, and I won't make that mistake again. Gonna be f'n awesome!

Re: Weta Orthanc Pre-Ruin Environment

Does anyone remember where a comparison is of the Sideshow/Weta Orthanc and the Danbury Mint Bara-dur?
:orthanc

Dont have a side by side pic, but they were (relatively) the same size to each other. Bara-dur stood at roughly 14 inches.

So this new Orthanc will not make the best companion piece for it. Unless of course they release a Bara-Dur too... :stick

As to how that relates to the "real" sizes of both structures, I have no idea. :dunno

A WETA Bara-dur would be awesome. Not sure why one hasn't been made. But I think we'll see more great offering coming up.

The EX (limited to 400) will be numbered and comes with a gold plated Eye of Sauron pin.

Re: Weta Orthanc Pre-Ruin Environment

Are the 400 exclusive set sold through now?

Re: Weta Orthanc Pre-Ruin Environment

Yeah, they are but if you order and contact weta you can get on a list and if maybe you'll end up with one. Thats what I saw on S&F anyways.

Re: Weta Orthanc Pre-Ruin Environment

Oh ok, thanks Josh.

I'll probably skip it anyway. Just was wondering. Although, it would be nice to have Orthanc and the eventual Barad-Dur I am sure Weta will do, and have "The Two Towers".

No problem. I'm getting it to go with a Barad-Dur that I hope and pray they make. Those two would amazing together done by the folks at Weta.

*I would also love love love for them to make a Minas Tirith.

I bought this with the hope they will make the rest at a larger scale.

Please Weta, make this happen

Re: Weta Orthanc Pre-Ruin Environment

Sign me up for sure. I have the Danbury Mint Barad-Dur and Minas Tirith but I want them done by Weta.

Re: Weta Orthanc Pre-Ruin Environment

Selling out a 400 ES item in less than a day under those circumstances is actually pretty impressive.:D Especially one that will be re-listed as an open edition.

In many ways I think the Bag End one is even more impressive. There are now less then 200 left of the CE, which had an ES 1111. That's doing pretty well, considering that the open edition is half the price and from the front, you really can't tell the difference.

Re: Weta Orthanc Pre-Ruin Environment

Not being many left is why I jumped on getting one from Weta at Comic-Con. Didn't want to miss out on the CE.

Re: Weta Orthanc Pre-Ruin Environment

Anybody know the REAL difference in size between Orthanc and Barad-dur...any mention of their heights in cannon or appendices or in the lore?

Re: Weta Orthanc Pre-Ruin Environment

About 3-4 thousand feet .

Orthanc

"Between them was a narrow space, and there upon a floor of polished stone, written with strange signs, a man might stand five hundred feet above the plain. This was Orthanc, the citadel of Saruman"

Give or take 100 foot more for the spikes or 'horns'.

Barad Dur

"It seems implied Barad-Dur's height was comparable to that of the nearby Ash Mountains, or to Mount Doom which stated to be about 4500 feet high (3000 ft shoulders, "half again" i.e. 1500 ft central cone), comparable to some of the higher heights in the Smokey Mountains in western North Carolina, in the Appalachian chain in North America. The door of the Sammath Naur was "high in the central cone" but not near the summit, and it is implied the Window of the Eye in Barad-Dur, presumably the highest chambers, the dwelling of Sauron himself, was at about the same elevation as the door, which was between 3000 and 4500 ft high. Therefore you might get a fair approximation of Barad-Dur's size."

True, but I think the phrase "quick sellout" has to be kept in perspective. a) it's Weta, not Sideshow, b) it went up for pre-order late on a weekend (in the US/UK), and c) it's LOTR, which has always been a bit more of a "slow burn" as far as sellouts go.

Hey, I'm just glad it was still available, as there's no way I would have paid the same money for an OE version. :cuckoo: No doubt selling out an ES in less than a day is impressive....SS hasn't managed to do that since Jan. with the excl. Legolas maquette. I'll probably even buy a 2nd one [OE] down the road when the price starts to tank, and have it converted to a post-ruin version. :)

Yes, if Barad Dur was made to scale with this, it would be enormous. Even if the movies dont follow the same measurements as what Tolkien wrote, all you need to do is visualize what we see on-screen side by side. The "tiny" bridge extending from the front entrance of Barad Dur appears to have an entire army marching out of it, where the top of Orthanc is about the size of a living room. Orthanc is probably more close to one of the side towers:

However, still cant wait to have this and would gladly buy the other when the time comes.
