Re: Weta Orthanc Pre-Ruin Environment

I read a very well-reasoned analysis that came to the same conclusion that DaveMac posted.

Based on what Tolkien wrote, we know with certainty that the topmost platform on Orthanc was 500 feet above the plain (so we can assume the four spires were another 25-50 on top of that). But in comparing the two, Tolkien called Orthanc a "child's toy" or "slave's copy" in comparison to Barad-dur.

We also know that Mount Doom was 4500 feet tall, and that Sammath Naur was somewhere above 3000 feet, most likely between 3200-3600 feet. One reference I read indicated that it was in the lower half of the cone (which began at around the 3000 foot mark). And, given the (very reasonable) assumption that Sauron would have constructed his upper chamber in Barad-dur on a level with Sammath Naur, it would be likely that his tower would have been somewhere between 3300 and 3700 feet tall.

So, based on the dimensions of the new Orthanc statue, the tower itself is about 16 inches tall. That works out to (roughly) 1/400 scale. Taking an "average" estimate of Barad-dur at 3500 feet, in the same scale it would be about 8 3/4 feet tall.

So, I don't think we'll be seeing a same-scale companion to Orthanc any time soon. :)

Scale-wise...no. Size-wise...as long as it is at minimium the same size as Orthanc I'll be happy, though I think something in the 20-24" range would be perfect.

Thank-you for that. I was always curious how big Barad-dur was.

Re: Weta Orthanc Pre-Ruin Environment

Do you guys think BBTS will have the Open Edition for Pre-order?

Re: Weta Orthanc Pre-Ruin Environment

I doubt it. I don't recall ever seeing anything from Weta directly with them.

Re: Weta Orthanc Pre-Ruin Environment

Ok, I was asking because they have The Prancing Pony and Rivendell on their site.

Re: Weta Orthanc Pre-Ruin Environment

I dont like it. The trees look completely fake and not well detailed.

At $300 (premium format price) and no edition size, it's a a pass for me.

Re: Weta Orthanc Pre-Ruin Environment

I would also have passed at $300. Thank goodness it's only $250. And I will also be getting a piece numbered out of 400. So no passing here.

Re: Weta Orthanc Pre-Ruin Environment

Yeah, having one of the ones in the numbered run will be the cherry on top. You're gonna enjoy this one Tom it looked fantastic at comic-con.

Re: Weta Orthanc Pre-Ruin Environment

I remember when Sideshow cancelled my order for the original. Outdated credit card info and I was out of town for a week and missed their attempts to communicate with me. Every time I've seen the original, it stings. It's going to be awesome to finally have an Orthanc on my shelf.

Re: Weta Orthanc Pre-Ruin Environment

I missed it. That was just before I got into collecting the statues so I'm glad to finally have a chance to add Orthanc to my collection. After getting Bag End CE at comic-con and having Rivendell on order as well I'm tempted to go back and get a couple of the old environments.

I'm almost as excited for you to get one as I am for myself, Tom. I can't believe you lost out that way. It is like the planets aligned against you. I remember that I looked at it about a dozen times when it went up for order, but the environments were so new then that I wasn't sure I wanted to get into them. So, I passed. On a $95 item. Big mistake. :D

Re: Weta Orthanc Pre-Ruin Environment

So glad you finally got one Tom. I just got into the enviros after the original Orthanc. I remember looking at it on the site and saying 'I'll get one of those eventually'...well, it's finally eventually! :rock

I have all the other enviros (except the stone trolls). Finally managed to get the Bucklebury Ferry a few months back. Can't wait for Rivendell, Orthanc 2.0 and Barad-Dur!!!:yess:

Helms deep wasn't bad, and you can pick it up pretty near cost still.

Re: Weta Orthanc Pre-Ruin Environment

Nah, Helms Deep was cool. I had it back in the day. It and Moria are the two I wouldn't mind going back and getting for the right price.
