My Gollum collection started and ended with the Smeagol statue that came with The Two Towers Extended Edition.:lol

scored the mean gollum companion piece to go with the one in the gift set. they display together excellently!!!

I hear you all on the price point of this new Gollum. It does hurt.

But still, I think it's nice to see the huge improvement in sculpting and painting (at least on the proto) Weta has achieved here. For sheer quality I have to applaud them, less so for their price policy.

to be honest, the PF gollum from sideshow kicks the crap out of this one.

One is a 1/4 scale premium format, the other a 1/6 scale polystone statue!!

Of course you're going to get more detail in a larger piece! It's useless comparing them, coming from two different licences and sizes!
Statue collectors will get the statue, PF collectors will get the PF. And if you like both, you'll get both. :slap :gah:

All right Photoshoppers ... somebody needs to photoshop a computer keyboard in front of this picture with the caption "I'll be with you in a minute ... somebody is wrong on the Internet."

Or maybe put a piano in front of him and an Elton John feather boa around his neck! :lol

Silliness aside, this is a pretty terrific looking statue! Seriously considering picking it up ...

Yeah, its as good a statue and representation as you're going to get of Gollum at this scale. I've already got it mentally in my collection and it looks great. :rock

I think you've stumbled onto something. I might just start collecting statues mentally and save some bucks. That way I can have nine Dark Riders. Man, I can see it now and does it look sweet.

:lol

:lol

Just don't say it out in public. That might get you some looks. :lol

you missed the point. only $50 difference in the retail price gets you so much more in the PF. :slap

Naw, it is a easy pass, just how many damn Gollum statues do we need!!!

SS and WETA just dont get it we need NEW, fresh characters already!!!

YAWNS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thing is Gollum would be done at somepoint. He wasn't going to be left out and Riddles in the Dark is an important sequence. So him being made was a certainty I think. People can pass and save for say when Radagast comes along.

Agreed! While this is an exceptional piece, judging from the proto, it is WAY OVERPRICED.

No way would I pay more than $180-190 for this. For perspective, take a look at the similarly scaled DC Batman vs Killer Croc which is the exact same price at retailers as this Gollum statue.

I haven't dipped my toe into Weta's The Hibbit line yet - but this one might just push me over the edge. :)

I really like this one...and he looks even better with his companion piece, Bilbo. :rock

I think Weta may have hooked me this time. :slap

i own the PF and it obviously is more intricate with more display options than a lunging version only 9" tall for $50 less.

some people can evaluate a piece without having to actually touch the item. :slap

An evaluation based on pre production images of a prototype and compared to an in hand, finished, totally different sculpture is pointless.
No one thinks the price is right, but both sculpts are at the top of there respective fields (the PF for definate, the proto probably based on others in the line) :lecture

Ah yes, well there i agree with you. You didn't make that point clear enough. The price for this new Gollum statue is outrageous and i can't see how it can be justified, especially when you consider the Boromir maquette costs the same!!
Great sculpt, and i do want it, but as it's an open edition i'll wait and get it cheaper down the line through other retailers or ebay.

It's true. We do need some fresh polystone faces. Gentle Giant just showed in their newsletter yesterday that they're doing a Goblin King mini-bust (with matching Goblin Scribe mini-mini-bust). I don't plan on buying one (he's a little too ugly for me) but I appreciate that they're branching out.

And there in lies the rub. :wink1:

That is why companies won't branch out and make characters they fear won't sell...so they just keep making the old tried and trusted ones they know will (at least to some degree). :)

Can't blame them really. :monkey2

That is something to think about and something I think is totally spot on.

Rub me in the right place and I'll roll right on over and spill the contents of my (money) pouch :rotfl
