He was the lead. Kind of hard not to start with that.

This one might go the route of Harvey D when the avatar sequels come out and HT won't make any more figures.

He was the lead but he wasn't the lead bad-ass. And then they give him a dumb-ass expression. Stoopid.

I don't get why people are adding Maria Hill and Quicksilver to the list?
Weren't there a lot of people complaining that Quicksilver wasn't part of the initial AOU line up?

I don't know why people are labelling them flops already. Poor reception, maybe? I didn't really look in those threads.

Aren't we gauging 'flops' by poor Sideshow sales? They aren't even out yet.

Word! :lecture

Some folks seem to think if a figure doesn't sell out at Pre-Order, within about 7 days, then the figure is a 'flop'.. I think the important part of the thread title is the word 'biggest'.. so the figure needs to have been released at least 6 months ago, peg warmed at multiple retail outlets and suffered the ignominy of massive discounts and/or freebie gift status from Sideshow to qualify.. in my opinion this means New Goblin, Angelica, Jake Sully and Amber are all front runners and it also covers the rubber debacle for ED-209 v2.

If Hot Toys are smart they will have learned from the first Hawkeye figure..simply have lower production runs for less iconic figures (if there is an opportunity to make a version 2, then the head sculpt is already in the bag).. effectively the bottom line is always going to be whether the production run was pitched accurately, against demand.

Imho, as we get further into the Marvel Film Universe, some figures will only generate limited interest, mainly from diehard fans..so it would be unwise for HT to think every Marvel figure will sell like Iron Man, indeed the repeated delay for the Drax figure from GotG, may be an indicator HT are not sure they can sell a break-even production run.. I think some of HT figures from AoU could also demonstrate that fact, if HT misjudge the demand.

A figure hasn't sold out at pre order for years.

Didn't Python?..but criticism of hyperbole duly noted.. or are you talking about selling out and there being absolutely zero subsequent stock available?.. which nowadays would probably have to be an old skool, Convention limited edition by a smaller manufacturer.
Fairly sure that apart from its connections with certain Far Eastern Lifestyle publications, HT is not overly focused on that sort of promotion any more..Midas perhaps marking the tipping point for 'special' releases, with rather larger production runs than expected.

Python, Midas and Stealth Mk 7 all did. Thought the McFly EX did too.

Reg Robocop and Robocop with chair will be available at SS for almost a full year. Is that a flop? I don't know......you decide.

I'm surprised HT keep making Johnny Depp figs. Pretty sure Sweeney Todd tanked as did Tonto & Ichabod Crane. I think Jack Sparrow was a decent seller but I don't think many collectors are interested in Jonny Depp related figs?

And yet Chan refuses to touch Star Trek....because he isn't interested in it. It'd probably sell at least as well as random Johnny Depp characters.

I was wondering this exact same thing. It's far to early to label these as flops.

welll the question is easy..mandarin, jake sully, jor el

how about what is the ironman figure that flop?

None of Ironman figure is flop, literally none of Marvel figure is flop. Now we know why Marvel is their prioritize.

.
I don't think it's Indy. I agree the figure was a sub par offering for the sculpt and the price, But he sold out and his value has increased in the after market. That right there shows some success.

he was a peg warmer that hit the grail status for reasons that still baffles me. lolz
the power of suggestion.
like the reason behind the fantastic 4 positive reviews.lolz

It's only because Indy has a big fan base and the Hot Toys one was the only modern option.
They are starting to hit eBay right now with prices dropping. People are trying to offload before the new one hits.

POTC Angelica
GIJ Roadblock
Tron Legacy Kevin Flynn
IM3 Mandarin
Tonto
Goblin
ASM Spidey 2
Kerberos Panzer Jager
Power Pose IM Mk 42, Red Snapper
Mechanic Stark, Arc Creation Stark
AOU Quicksilver
AOU Maria Hill
RE Alice
Electro
Sleepy Hollow
Sweeney Todd
That Asian dude with the chair for $420+
A bunch of Predator dolls
Every Sucker Punch Doll
Every Artist Mix they offer
Every Bust they offer

Really, you think Alice flopped? I feel like that one moved through pretty quickly.

As far as IM flops i would say that last war machine (mk 2.0). Price was ridiculously over priced. They thought they could get whatever they wanted for it cuz it was IM and an "exclusive". Last i saw its still on the ss website not really moving.

I think the Jack Sparrow figure is quiet possible the best figure they have ever produced, from an artistic standpoint.

I guess that's how I judge a flop, not be sales. I think a flop is some figure that is uninspired artistically and just plain dull.... I guess some people really want what's hot no matter how seriously dull that character is....

Right now my leading flop is "Quicksilver" that thing is just DULL. Not to mention a tertiary character that's just not interesting. (To me) might as well make an X-men line and add in that tattooed porcupine guy..

I would have also bought the JD Ichabod Crane, but the sculpt is inferior to me.

I like the Jake figure a lot, also the Crow, and actually think the Mandarin is an excellent figure likeness. But at least in that last case , the Mandarin falls into that "not an interesting character" category.

So judging a flop?

1. Is the sculpt a good likeness?
2. Is the character done well? Good assessories and pose?
3. Is the character itself an interesting one? Worthy of HT's effort and time?
4. Is it an original idea or has it been rehashed a dozen times?

I was looking at it just from a commercial perspective which is basically letting the aftermarket be the judge. Ex- the space marines have mediocre sculpts at best. But you cant buy one for under $400. New goblin has a great sculpt. And you can get one free with a full tank of gas. Another example- HT has done IM to death. Nothing original at this point. Basically just part swaps and repaints. But they sell like hot cakes. So im not sure just the artistic measure defines a flop. At least for me anyway.

I feel that the definition of flop is something that meets a certain gross/net expectation and is based around hard numbers. While there aren't numbers to back up what is being claimed to be a flop, there is a previous understanding of product movement and how it pertains to this discussion. Thereby making it objective.

Saying something is a flop based on whether or not someone doesn't like the design is subjective and is simply based on opinion.

This thread seems to be based on whether or a not something is a flop due to underperformance of sales.
