I do believe that Disney is largely deferring to Kathleen Kennedy's wisdom on these films and she seems (at least with Abrams and Kasdan) to be open to letting the filmmakers make the movies they want to make.
I really like the mindset that Kennedy, Abrams, and Kasdan had with these films.
Kennedy has repeatedly spoken the mantra, "No Jar Jar, no ewoks," in press conferences and I just watched a 40 minute interview with Abrams where he not once referred to Episode IV as "A New Hope." It was constantly "Star Wars," "Star Wars," "Star Wars." That IS the title of the film after all and I can't help but take comfort in hearing him acknowledge that. I think the powers that be just "get" what made SW great and what fans (in general) have always wanted from the saga, largely on account of being fans themselves.
Abrams also quoted his buddy Simon Pegg's story about letting his four year old daughter watch the six films in order and how after the PT she exclaimed "Look daddy, Yoda is REAL!" when he appeared in ESB. Abrams said that really drove home to him how critical it is to have real on-set creatures and aliens as much as possible in the new films.
