Yea, I know what you mean. I am done with school for years now and only have a couple of yrs to finish off the payments. The good news is I am still building my career. Still learning and making more $$$ on each new position.
The real question is should I switch position again. Time will tell.

What are you thinking of getting into if you do decide to change paths?

Not really changing path. More like my next position in my current career in IT(Software Developer, Software Engineering, Programmer, etc.). I learn more from different position but switching too much and too soon isn't good as I might still have things to learn from the current position or possibly alienating recruiters who need to fill a long term position. Switching position early in IT career isn't bad at all. I've seen numerous people do it early in their career. And there's alot of short term position out there. This is my 4th position as I don't count my 2 months intern experience as a position now a days.
Although once I am done reading a pile of Hulk old comics and some others, I like to spend time customizing my own Hulk 1/4 statue. Maybe eventually do 3 Hulk customs. Already started researching but still got some way to go. But I don't see myself building a career or making a living in this area of work.

I plan to one day be broke and homeless.

One can dream can't they.

Interesting philosophy or idea. I've heard, read, and seen on TV those who does it. There are those nomadic people living about in a certain country in Africa, South America, etc. Even possible in America. Some guy managed to live in cave and scavanged for food in dumpsters. Proof that you don't need alot of substance to live. Not exactly the pop culture living standards, LOL.

But ah, the under achiever in some of us. :monkey1

I think I've posted in here before, but I got a new job (really more of a promotion) in November so I'm gonna post an update. :D I'm an Instructional Designer for UCF. Basically, I help professors design, build, and maintain their online classes. I also teach a class on Fridays to professors on how to go about this sort of thing.

Wow man, what the heck is American Studies? Is that a degree on American culture? Maybe you'll find a public relation(PR) position? Or international relation?

My position is boring atm. I work for a consulting company with a few contract for the military. Company is growing but I am barely getting any work and the secretcy/sensitivity/communication of the company is annoying now. I am open for a different position although I am not openly apply or posting my resume online. Maybe I should just be happy that I have a job in a bad economy?

more than a month later..Yeah, It is basically american culture past and present. I wrote my final paper on the visual culture of horror movie remakes. Basically looking at how two movies with a similar promise can change based on what issues are important at the time, with an emphasis on how it is visually represented. An obvious example could be the thing from another world=early cold war mentality, john carpenters the thing=late cold war mentality. You can basically argue anything as long as you back it up.

Frankly though, I need help with what sort of work to look for.
I secured a permanent part-time positions at the container store logistics department but I'm looking for a full-time job I can at least start a career doing. Although I am very happy to have that job, I need to start making real money.

I'm really passionate about the things that I love...comics, film, music, and especially toys. It'd be awesome to incorporate those things into a career but I can't seem to find a niche.

If anyone could point me into a direction of any sort of work they would recommend I would appreciate it and certainly look into it.

I am prepared to have a day job and a night job, and do what I love in any free time I have.

Look into museum work. Like museum curator, catalogue, researcher. Maybe look into U.S. Census. They keep track of certain trend or some work involve past, present, and possible future trend or work involve such trend. Trend like living standard, cultural standard, cultural influence. Try your hand at writting a book or reporter specific to a certain cultural area. I remember a certain writer specialize in writting automotive cars; maybe you can do the same but for like home decoration/design/living quarters(small). Be a writer for an online site or magazine. Work for some travel agency/company/state that want to draw more tourism so they need someone to write/advertise local cultures. Maybe try your luck at marketing that involve demographic research. Lots of company want to maximize their efficiency by advertising to a certain demographic trend/group/culture. Work for a certain town/city's cultural heritage. I hear some town have people who regulate/prohibid a certain design in a effort to keep a certain culture/history alive; no pink flamingo on the front porch or else!!!!

Its somewhat risky but you might want to continue your education by minoring in Marketing, History, Business Administration, etc. Some big company have branch in a different country that need a representative that have cultural understanding; Public relation or even Human resource comes to mind. Since you're into film, try your luck at costume designer for film company. They always need someone to costume a certain character to match a certain scenery, era, role, etc. You might end up as a costume director like those that get credit in The Lord of the Ring movie.

I hear people with a Master degree in Psycology working as a director in Human Resource, History professor who changed path and work as an IT Director. Oddball but true.

Good luck!

Damn, and you're not happy with a Microbiology and Zoology degree? Can't imagine how much you'll owe by the time you finish with a doctor degree.
I worked with chemistry/microbiology dept in my previous career. Man did I worked various odd jobs before.

I want to become a Doctor. So I needed an Undergrade Degree 1st, before going to Medicine. And since I go to school in Canada, school does not cost as much :nana:

Im a Graphic Designer... Worst mistake of my life.

I have always enjoyed art and thought i could be successful mixing business with pleasure. Got my Associates Degree in Graphic Design in 2004 at one of those BS "for profit" colleges. To this day i have never felt for a moment that i was on the road to somewhere. So easy to do the market is saturated beyond belief, Graphic Designers are literally a dime a dozen.

Want to go back to school and get a degree in IT Security. Having a hard time getting into a nice college though, since no school will recognize my previous school as being accredited. Now I'm starting from scratch and the last 7 years of my life have been for nothing.

I do not recommend Graphic Design or taking a shortcut through "for profit" colleges to anyone.

I'm one seamester away from having my undergrad in Counselling.

Than it's off to get my masters so I can actually pratice.

In the mean time I work on a sinking burning ship called Blockbuster:monkey2

I feel ya. I took a couple of semester, doing commercial art, at Vocation Tech before I graduated High School which interested me at the time. Then I made the mistake of going on to college majoring in architecture. Got an associated degree eventually but wish I never started. But oh well, there's a few reasons why I failed but its a solid learning experience. I still wonder if it was meant to be.

Lesson learned: Don't be a starving artist. However, I do have alot of respect for successful artist out there.
