I want the next gen consoles to have a more open platform I.e. more open operating systems that would allow users to use the console even more as a media hub.

Right now the ps3 is still quite limited in the support. Cant watch so many different types of files.

I think Microsoft is planning on going in that direction with their next box.

Just buy a PC :nana:

Nah. The console has a significant role as a media hub.

Firstly, not everyone wants to consume digital media in front of their computer screen.

Secondly, not everyone wants to hook up a desktop next to their home theatre system.

E.g. When I have friends over, if I want to show them some photos, I can simply insert my flash drive into my ps3 and browse the photos. No need to bust out my laptop and hdmi cable and try to hook it up.

My PC is always connected to my plasma via HDMI. It's so much easier to use than a console imo.

I have both my PS3 and Gateway laptop connected to my 60" DLP TV via HDMI cables. I also have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse connection, so I can switch to my laptop if I want to play Dragon Age Origins, Starcraft II, or Crysis. It's a really great set-up. No reason for why I should sacrifice PC gaming for a console experience or vice versa, when I can have both.

I think that will be a big focus of new systems. Over the years they've been adding more and more of that functionality to the current consoles.

I think they know that to really make something that lots of people will buy in the future, then they'll need it to be more than just a gaming machine.

Consoles being a media hub can't progress more than what they are until DRM and non-cross-platform files are abolished.

My PS3 can't play some of my itunes music not because of the PS3 but because Apple restrict where the files can be used.

I like digital downloads. but prefer disc. so i would like a multi disc changer. sometimes ill have multiple new games at once and always switchin back and forth

I didn't want to read 9 pages so sorry if this has been discussed for 4 pages straight or something....

Both the Xbox360 and PS3 are only halfway through their lifespans. Both companies are now looking at the systems to have a 10yr life

PS2 lasted for years after the PS3 came out. Sony and Microsoft must release a new console in the next couple of years. They have no choice otherwise there will be big problems.

It's a good time for them anyways, they can design something that's a big upgrade for a low cost, plus they can easily outdo the Wii U

XBox 720 to be 6 times better than the 360 and 20percent better than the WiiU

I'm a little confused as i though the Wii U was about the same performance wise as the PS3 & 360. So how can this new Xbox be 6 times better and only 20% better at the same time?

Anyway, i learned my mistake buying the RROD xbox 360 when it first came out, this will have to be reported as running smooth as a babies behind for me to splash the cash

I'm sure its all bull____ like 80% of console speculation. Im hoping the Jump is as big as PS3-PS4 as it was for PS2-PS3.
Sony said the learned from their mistake of making an overly powerful future proof console - which i totally disagree with. That was the best aspect of the PS3. It was just the price and release date that let them down.

That was the most frustrating thing about it. The machine is far to complicated to program for and most multi format games have suffered as result.
And then there's the hacking :slap

So what is the Wii U nintendo's attempt at making an adult console? I haven't looked that much into it. If so, they should change the name.

IMO it will be more like the Gamecube. Capable of getting amazing results, but not fully realized by most third party developers. They will probably play it safe like they did with the Wii. They should probably implement more online capability if they want to stay relevant.
