So there was a cool discussion in another thread yesterday as to why people go to see a movie, what gets their butts in the seats.

Is it because their favourite actors or filmakers are involved?

Because they like what they see in the trailer?

Because they like the genre?

Voted the genre option. I would say most of the films I've seen at the cinema would be sci-fi and fantasy - the stuff most worthwhile seeing on the big screen. Anything else I can wait to see at home.

A perfect storm of genre, previews, and babysitting options. Otherwise, we wait. Very few I actually plan to see ... this year, just Superman. We don't see that many theatrical releases these days.

This year, I'll see probably two or three, not including movies we take the kids to see ... like Monsters 2 and Despicable Me 2.

This is me. I rarely see a comedy at the theater, for instance.

This doesn't work here Nova.

This is a nerd site. We're all nerds. You have to ask real people.

You're going to get the answer you want. Not the actual answer.

People here are obviously going to say story, director, actor, trailer, ect. Because we watch trailers over and over, and we know all the details before a single frame is shot.

I'm gonna see new "Riddick". Only saw few official stills and never saw the trailer :wave
Just cuz I like this franchise too much to spoil the watch.

P.S. very few nerds on this forum.

For those voting Other. Please elaborate it'll be interesting :)

It's a universal question, What do you see movies for.

The fact that people here may see more blockbuster type movies or pay more attention to trailers than the masses is irrelevant.

I don't desire any particular outcome of the votes just want to see the majority outcome

I voted "I go for a reason not listed" because for me, it's always random. It's never who's in it, who made it, the genre, the marketing/trailers, etc. every single time.

That too. For film fans, we're sorta up for almost anything.

A movie about baby sex? Uh....is it good? If so...maybe? :lol (and that movie does exist, and i've seen it, and it's hilarious because it's so ****ty. It has a deeper meaning...but **** that.)

I don't think it's any one thing for me. Except on rare occasions, it really comes down to the basic story and previews. I think Scorsese is the only director where I'll go see a movie just because it was directed by him. I love sci-fi, action, horror...but if I went to see a movie based on genre alone I'd end up seeing a lot of crap. And there's definitely not any movie I'd go to just because a particular actor was in it.

Btw, I hate spoilers. So while I'm interested in story, I don't want to know any details about a film beforehand. I also love seeing films on the big screen, so I try to see as many that interest me in the theater.

For me it is a combination or things.
Marketing helps of course, but I never go to a movie just because of that.
I think mostly I go after I read reviews online and read a couple of opinions. So I guess my option would be word of mouth and reviews.

Sometimes a movie looks good no matter what, even if the reviews are bad so I see it.
