What happened to LOTR statues

I do honestly hope that the Sideshow/weta line continues to hold its price in the market, but as far as I can see and with the collectible knowledge I have, the slide has begun and even though some of these pieces are of a low limited edition,it will not stop the rot. This lines 'HIGH' has come and gone so for those who believe that some of their statues will increase in value if the Hobbit finally arrives..I say you are very blinkered. Can't you see whats going on.... and the blatant trends with collectors to have something new and to grab new lines while they are 'hot'??At the end of the day we are ALL being taking for mugs by companies who thrive on our excitement about new product and our weakness towards the fear of missing out on a 'exclusive' or 'limited edition' item.
Before the backlash begins - I am not slagging anyone off as I am just as much as a culprit as anyone. Its just that I have generally lost a LOT of money from collecting modern 'collectibles'(SW figures being the main culprit..so glad I weened myself off them now!!).I just want people to realise that this will NOT make you rich and if you have no love for the products you are buying, you'd be better off investing in the stock market or something.
Even now LOTR items of the past are being easily surpassed in quality terms by other companies(see GG busts) so imagine IF by the time the Hobbit comes out, what sort of statues etc we will see then. As for myself, I have sold most of the Weta items I feel i could live without, except for GOS,and will hopefully keep the ones that left me awestruck in the first place..Cavetroll, RWOS etc.just my two pennies as everyone says!!

Yep, at the end of the day, you keep what you ultimately fell in love with. My belief has always been to buy for the long haul. I'm a collector at heart, so whatever the ups and downs of the market exist is all just speculation.

when the hobbit is made and if weta are involved they would probably
get the rights to make a hobbit polystone line.then see the interest in
lotr statues!!!
apart from that eventuality for the near future its the long haul for prices
to hit the roof again.time will show the ssw line as the true classic
collectables they are.
i have many expensive pieces and bought them not as a fad but because
they are outstanding.no lotr collectable in any line now or in the future
by any company will come near the brilliance of the cave troll.
im still in love with my ssw collection.
and they're easy to display but are big enough for excellent detail.
i want a smaug weta statue within the next 3 years...:drool

My 2 Cents:

The WETA statues, to me, will always be the ultimate collectable from the movie. In my opinion, the PF figures are not in the same league, as nice as they are. The polystone figures will increase in price with time. Years from now collectors will associate these pieces with the books rather than just the movie. The rarer pieces will dwindle from the market as they eventually end up in the hands of collectors rather than speculators while others will disappear from damage and breakage or just plain loss.

The books are timeless and far better than the movies (although I do love the movies too:D ).

The only part of my Tolkien collection I love more than my polystone are the hand written items by Tolkien and some first edition books by him that I'm lucky enough to own. I am certain the LOTR polystone pieces will increase in value over the years....although that is not my motivation for obtaining them as I've been a Tolkien collector since 1977.:monkey3

I don't buy these pieces in hopes that one day they will be worth a fortune. I hope they keep dropping so that I can finish getting some of the pieces that I want. I know that a lot of you feel differently. I am not trying to start an argument. It is just my opinion. I hope we have not seen the lowest of prices to date. However, I do not wish for dealers to take hits because of prices dropping. The dealers are already selling items to us a much better prices than the manufacturers.

Pretty much agree with you Mithrandier. I know a lot of people buy just to sell/trade for other collectibles. I collect just to do that, collect. I only buy figure/statues that I love and would want to add to my collection. So of course I want the cheapest price possible. The people that buy to sell/trade and to make a profit want the highest price possible to maximize profit. I guess it depends which side you are on, if even on a side.

I thought Sideshow announced that they are bringing back the 1/6 next year?

That would be excellent. I'm still on the fence about the PF line, Lurtz looks great but Frodo is way off, and it probably made alot of people pass on the line.

There is no demand for LOTR stuff anymore due to the lack of new stuff coming out. Poeple are going to start sliming their collections down a bit in fear that they can not complete a certain theme/group they were trying to collect.

The demand will always be there, they just have to stop making the same characters over and over. Make a PF Denethor on the throne sort of like PF Doom. Theres so many possibilities. But SS releases a Cave Troll Bust which Weta already made, its too much. Hopefully the next PF figure will be someone that we haven't seen from the WETA line.

But if the 1/6 poly comes back and Faramir is made with a nice edition size SSW will be reborn, the same goes if the 1/6 Hobbit statues are made, which will most likey happen. And then will be talking about the PF and 12 inch line going down in price.

That's one of the reason why I won't collect the line. I'm not a completist, but if the Frodo is the basis for this line, I'll pass. I dont' like him in the least. So I'll just collect my favorite characters, probably meaning just gandalf the grey, maybe the white.

Ok not to derail this thread, but do you think the same decline is more likely/inevitable for Marvel and/or Star Wars as well? Star Wars is such a huge marketing juggernaut and there are literally tons of merchandise (a lot of which I own) for it, but I do think that SS has hit on some of the nicest collectibles to own from the series. The same certainly goes for Marvel. If in fact, LOTR collectibles have seen their peak, do you foresee the same fate for both Marvel and Star Wars, or do you think one of them has more legs and will be harder to find for lower prices in the future. I don't collect specificly for profit, but it's nice to see your collection not dropping in pricing but maintaining or even growing, just in case for the future. Plus, with all the nice product from Sideshow, it's very hard choosing what to buy and what to wait on til later. I'm a fan of both as well as LOTR, so in terms of personal joy, they about level out, leaving about the only question - which will be the "investment" that I will have to drop a house payment to own, and which will I be able to find fairly easy for quite some time to come?

thats a good price for a broken statue with no box.

I was eyeing this auction, too and I thought the same thing after it ended.

Although the damage was described, it was not so easy to spot without reading thoroughly through the description.

It's been more than a year since this one regularly went for $1000, now a mint one is in the range of $700 - $850, so with $560 the seller got a lot for this particular statue. I guess either the buyer didn't read the whole description or just absolutely wanted to have this statue right now.

If thats the case, the seller has really meant NOT to highlight the damage... its so difficult to find in the description - the font size, colour everything is meant NOt to highlight the damage.... I have asked this guy about an item in the past, he seemed to be a nice guy,,,
