I watched all of these films for the first time within the past year or so. I'd never seen them and had been meaning to for a while. I might need to rewatch them, as usually I don't think a single viewing is enough to accurately gauge the quality of a film. So I might be rating them a bit unfairly. The Mad Max films are the only ones I watched more than once. The first one was actually my favorite, I guess, though I didn't think any of them were that good.
There are bits and pieces of the movies that I really liked, but overall, I felt most of them were average.
From Conan the Barbarian, the score is what stood out to me the most. It was original, it was empowering. Loved it.
The futuristic designs and the themes in Blade Runner appealed to me, everything else? Meh.
In Robocop the only thing I really cared about was his design. It's nice to see a robot design that isn't super sleek and speedy, which is all we see nowadays. And I thought he was just well-designed in general.
Total Recall. The plot twists were fun. Futuristic setting was cool. Hated the cheesiness and anything to do with the mutants.
Halloween... I take back the "borderline awful" comment. I thought it was flat-out terrible. I see people giving it 9/10's and 10/10's and I'm just shocked.
Forgot to add Ghostbusters. Watched it for the first time a few weeks ago and wouldn't rate it any higher than a 6/10. Yeesh. I don't see the overwhelming praise for this movie and the others I've mentioned. There was one joke that made me laugh, and that was the "This man has no ****" line.
Like I said though, maybe I need to go watch these a few more times to more accurately judge them.
I'm 19, so I didn't really get the opportunity to grow up watching these. I grew up on the Alien and Predator comics and the Kenner figures. Though I never actually sat down and watched the movies all the way through and really paid attention to them until I was about 14-15. When I did, it's like I had a breakthrough. I was amazed at how good they were, and my opinion of their quality hasn't changed much if at all since I first started watching them. I don't think any other 70s or 80s movies come close to the first few Alien and Predator films other than the Star Wars trilogy and Terminator.
I'll try to watch the Indiana Jones series and/or JAWS sometime this week. I just remembered, I actually saw an Indiana Jones movie in theaters. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
That's probably another reason I've been reluctant to watch the series. When I think "Indiana Jones", KotCS comes to mind and I guess I associate it with the rest of the movies in the series - despite not having seen them.
